I was going to install a new HD on this PC

https://www.gigabyte.com/au/Motherboard/GA-H61M-D2-B3-rev-11#ov

so I switched off at the plug, then pressed the start button to clear
the memory, but now the PC won't turn on again. any ideas?

remove RAM, SATA cables, keyboard, mouse, graphics card; if it still
will not fire up, the mainboard is dead after 12 years of service.
Or power supply.
As I have several workstations, I have a power supply tester, such as these:

so I removed everything but still no power. then I tried a new power
lead in another outlet and it worked. put that lead into the original
outlet and it still worked. put the original power lead back into the
original outlet and still working. strange fault. but it was caused by
pressing the power switch with the power off, I'm sure. maybe some
protection circuit engaged, then reset when the pc was earthed via a
different outlet?

That doesnt happen.

So what exactly happens ? Does the power
supply fan spin ? Do you see any lights at all ?
Does it beep at all ?

That's to get it to shut down with a laptop.

Very unlikely to die when turned off.

What battery ? It could need a new coin cell, but those don't get charged
up.

Nope, it just wasnt plugged in properly at one end or the other.

You have no basis for that surety.

Nope.

It doesn't seem strange, I would have suggested that if I've come
here earlier: poor connection in the mains lead or the mains
connector. You'd moved things a little and that moved the cable,
triggering the problem. A little wiggle in the power socket was
probably all it needed.

Or it could be like my radio last night where the wires have broken
inside the moulded connector on the power lead and only make/break
contact when you pull it from a certain angle. I plucked another
one off the shelf and was back in action.

You don't need to clear any memory when you install a new HD. Just
switch it off while you do it. It will work out whatever is
connected each time it boots up anyway.

It clearly wasn't.

Sounds like a dodgy 240 volt power board,
Might be a bit more expensive but get one with a on/off switch for
each socket.
This is direct from China they fly them to you, in Sydney no more than
a week later in your mailbox (in unlikely event of refund you connect
to their site and ask for a refund, they will send you a printed label
to take to post office with returned item/s and you will be instantly
credited with what you paid).
They need at least a AU$35 order so add socks or something to item if
under $35.

I found this a good replacement for eye drops anda eye-glasses
moister to wet, then clean glasses with cloth/tissue (shop around for
better price)
