what SATA mode is best for SSD drives? Legacy or AHCI? I've seen it said
that AHCI shortens the lifespan.

BIOS SATA mode
This mode is set prior to SSD installation and can be difficult to
change after an OS is installed because drivers within your OS will be
configured around this setting during installation. We recommend using
AHCI mode for our drives. This mode offers high performance and easy
setup and takes best advantage of an SSD's features. This is usually
the default configuration on an OEM-preinstalled OS or factory-new
motherboard.

I haven't heard that, and it's hard to imagine a reason why that
would be. A quick web search brings up results suggesting the
opposite is true because AHCI supports TRIM commands to help SSDs
erase data more efficiently.

The one issue could be with OS support, where Wikipedia describes
possible problems with using AHCI for a Windows boot drive if it
wasn't installed that way or is pre-Vista:

yes, guess I was just being paranoid. Crucial recommends AHCI. I'm
installing both windoze and Linux in AHCI mode

If you install an OS in legacy (IDE) SATA mode you can't then change the
bios to AHCI or you'll get BSOD. I think it can be done, but not easily,
and I don't know how. the same applies for installing with AHCI bios
then switching to IDE mode.

I notice the motherboard had IDE as the default, but it's old. I don't
know if newer ones still do, but it's something that needs to be checked
when installing SSD's, or mechanical drives, if you want to use AHCI mode

Not sure if it's still so but SSD's have/had a lot less life
expectancy than mechanical drives.

yes, I was reluctant to change to SSD. I have mechanical drive that are

I was reluctant too, but the performance improvement is significant.
Moving from HD to SSD was like getting a new computer.

With regards to their lifetime, just backup. Keep backups. You can
get pretty cheap SSD's. The ones I have I got for free. Worrying
about them wearing down is understandable when your paying hundreds
and hundreds, but some smaller ones are relatively quite cheap. It's
the same with SD Cards, why am I worried about wearing down something
which is priced at consumable prices?

yes, frequent backup is necessary. I have plenty of mechanical hard
drives I can use for backups. I use https://www.aomeitech.com . it's free

You can maximise the life of an SSD by not filling it to more than
2/3rds of it's capacity. This allows the wear leveling mechanism to work
efficiently. Corporate SSDs limit user space to less than full capacity
for this reason and to allow for dead areas to be bypassed. For instance
they come in 200GB rather than 256GB and 400GB rather than 512GB sizes.
