I watched it last night. A very interesting programme.

(Spoiler) I had no idea that a car could have a sim, and linking a
mobile phone's location to that of the Range Rover's sim was an
important piece of evidence.

Starring?? Siobhan Finneran narrated, Denis McWilliams was the programme
editor, etc.

Yes, my car has a SIM built in. It allows the Emergency call system tow
operate even if I don't have my mobile turned on. It is also meant to
enable Software Updates overnight, but that didn't work when we tried
it. Nice idea, though.

My car can either use a bluetooth protocol (rSAP) to "share" my phone's
SIM, or can use an eSIM provided by the manufacturer.

My VW connects to a network but there is nothing to say which one.

My BMW does too, but I can't directly access it. Sends service reminders, recalls and traffic information (even though I think I need to have a subscription to get this). It is very slow and on 2G.

Later BMW's can allow data access via one's phone's Bluetooth.

From about a decade ago top end Audi's could have an optional SIM tray, which made the car into a Wi-Fi hot spot and increased the info on the display (like current weather etc.)

Mine's an Audi, it came with 3 years of included 4G data, for satnav/map
updates, remote access (where did I leave my car, let me remotely check
how how much fuel it has, are the doors/windows/sunroof/bonnet open?)
mostly pretty useless gimmickery

Now the eSIM is still active (needs to be for e-Call I presume) but the
licence to use most of the features has expired, they would like
£SILLY/month to renew the licence, they can fuck off.
