A friend of mine sent me several text messages that I have not
received, even though she received texts from me okay. She is on
Virgin Mobile (via O2 AIUI) and I am on Vodafone. I have received
subsequent texts from her. Can texts go missing?

yes - and they frequently do, even for the vanishingly small number of
people who still pay for them

Are both of you in the UK or is one/both of you not in the UK? ISTR
there is an issue for instance sending texts on VF to or from South Africa.

Someone will doubtless now come along and report that it was fixed years
ago!

Occasionally. If it is critical prefix *0# on O2.

More usually it is forgetting to press send or a mistake in the number.

<wikipedia>

SMS message delivery is not guaranteed, and many implementations provide
no mechanism through which a sender can determine whether an SMS message
has been delivered in a timely manner.[70] SMS messages are generally
treated as lower-priority traffic than voice, and various studies have
shown that around 1% to 5% of messages are lost entirely, even during
normal operation conditions, and others may not be delivered until long
after their relevance has passed.[71] The use of SMS as an emergency
notification service in particular has been questioned.[70]

virginmobile are in the midst of migrating their customers to being O2
customers ... my migration happened this week, there were a couple of
wrinkles that took a day to right themselves ... maybe your friend was
similarly affected?
