Today, for the first time, I noticed my phone's data connection type was
"4g+". This was in a location where I know it generally struggles to
get *any* data connection and even cling on to 2G calls.

This was the first time I'd visited that location since being migrated
from VirginMedia (O₂ MVNO) to being directly on O₂ ...

I've migrated from Plusnet to EE and have seen the same thing, as well as 5G
and WiFi calling working. I need to check that's not stopping me reliably
getting calls though. Although some days that's not a big problem!

Virgin MNO's
1999 - 2019 - 121 -> T-Mobile -> EE
2019 - 2021 - Voda
2022 - date - O2

Switch overs tend to be gradual. IMO probably due to locked phones.

yes, I remember at the time I joined VM, I was seeing voda MCC/MNC,
later I was seeing O2 MCC/MNC

so for me not much changed when I got converted to being an actual O2
customer, just VoWiFi was enabled and monthly data was doubled.

Have the Virgin customers all been moved to O2 or are they still
customers of Virgin mobile with O2 as the carrier network?

Yes, but you now pay the bill to Virgin mobile or to O2?

O2 took over the existing VM direct debit, much like energy suppliers
did when they were going bust, I login to O2, have an O2 app, they even
give me free coffee ...
