How long have you tested it for, how many times, and on how many different
web sites?

I've used 5G in both Stockport and Manchester, and it's been rather odd
that the speed is either blindingly fast or snail's pace - fortunately
more often the former than the latter. No numeric measurements in my
case, just informal observations of web accesses.

Even for a speed test, you're going through a chain of network segments,
any of which can be overloaded or faulty. If you get consistently poor
performance over a period (long enough not to be just due to temporary
overload), it's time to complain.

Exactly. I got similar behaviour to OP but during the test the phone
changed from 5G to 4G. I was on the train...

5G is patchy around here so am not seeing much benefit from it.

This may be a blind alley of partially understood facts, but I remember
reading somewhere that some handsets fall back from 5G to 4G to save power.
The 5G chipset is power hungry, at least in current incarnations. If the
phone thinks it doesn’t need the speed it can fall back. Obviously for a
speed test you would think it does need the speed, but the phone might be
making a false decision during the upload part of the test.

I was in "town" today so got 5G. Oh, I though, I wonder how quick it is.
100Mb/s down, 0.18Mb/s up

So what would cause such disparity? Is there something wrong?

Measure again.

When I tested in March in Manchester, I got 227Mbps down and 96Mbps up.

Could be your phone, could be overenthusiastic uplink attenuation by the base station.

I've had the same

345 Mbs down / 38.7 Mbps up (derby)

and the reverse

129 Mbps down / 304 Mbps up (leicester)

both of which were quite consistently repeated at the respective locations

This was with a Nokia X20, a colleague with a Samsung A23 of some sort
got the same result.
