There is a mindset in the cellcomms industry that to get the nest
coverage you need aerial height. Wrong. They could quite easily put a
couple of pole masts up in the bottom of the valley to provide cover
smaller areas. They could even use tree-lookalikes to disguise them.

Yikes! I remember walking that pass, when I were a lad. No chance now.

That would be criminal to put that mast there.

Looks as if it might be light enough to take to site by helicopter. It
does the job getting people over the stream by the shortest route,
unlike many designed by architects and awarded 'design' awards.

A mast would do the job of allowing people to make phone calls, why
object to a mast, but not a bridge, when neither of them "belong" there?

Just count yourself lucky they have not put a 200 ft wind turbine tower
there along with 200 ft pylons .... yet.

Freudian slip - or are you providing coverage for the birds ?

Either way, I am not convinced that such a mindset exists, and in the
early days of GSM cell planning thats the exact opposite of what network
planners were looking for.

The ideal terrain for laying out a cellular network would be a series of
hexagonal depressions in the earth, something like 2km across in urban
areas.

Under these conditions the cell planner would like to position the cell
centre in the centre of the hexagon, but the transmission planner would
probably like to build on the higher ground between the cell centres in
order to get a microwave connection.

If the cell planner has to select a site which can be connected by
microwave then compromises will have to be made.

Thats how base stations wind up in the wrong place.

So if you slip and break your ankle or there is a sudden blizzard then you won't be able to phone for help...

Next they will be removing lighthouses...

I prefer the "alternative" Henry Ford quote :-

"The only thing we learn from history is that we learn nothing from
history"

Or that commonly ascribed to Einstein:

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/einstein-universe-stupidity-infinite/

.... which refers to ...

https://archive.ph/9rbWm

"There are two infinities in the world, the universe and man's stupidity,
but I'm not sure of the former."

.... which may itself have been a misremembering or paraphrasing of a
much earlier quote by Alexandre Dumas:

"One thing that humbles me deeply is to see that human genius has its
limits while human stupidity does not."

People have managed for hundreds of years with having a mobile phone.

If I went to remote places regularly, I would get a satellite based
system like SPOT.

Of course. They also managed without proper medicine, for example.

I, for one, support progress - making life better, safer, etc. Mobile
phones do contribute to improved safety.

True but if I was regularly in remote areas with poor or no mobile
coverage I would get an alternative.

There was a case near here years ago when someone was travelling alone
from coast to coast.

He had some sort of medical emergency in Glen Etive (I think). No
mobile coverage, not even on any of the previous emergency services'
networks. He activated the alert on his SPOT which sent a SAR helicopter
to the location.

There have been a few similar cases.

Yes, back in the 80's I was very grateful for my 1G mobile phone allowed me to summon emergency services when I was trapped in my car in the middle of the [snowy] Pennines.

Then my car did not have an EPIRB. nor GPS.
