I have WiFi calling enabled.
I assumed that this would kick in if I had no mobile signal but was
connected to WiFi.
However in my phone log I see a WiFi icon next to a lot of the calls.
Does this mean that the calls were over WiFi?
This shows on both incoming and outgoing calls.

Cheers

(Assuming android) you can configure it to prefer WiFi when available or
prefer mobile network unless unavailable, I think the default is the former.

When you make or receive a call, does the icon in the top status bar
have a phone handset with mini wifi signal showing? On mine, if
I pull the notification shade down twice, I get a scrolling message
showing the mobile network with/without "Wifi calling" appended, that
may vary by phone though.

You mean the phone's own history record for recent calls? Yes I get a
wifi icon there when appropriate, nothing shows on my O₂ bill whether it
was wifi or not.

I can't find such a setting on my Pixel 6a which has Android 14.
The only way I can ensure WiFi calling is to turn on Airplane
Mode and turn on WiFi.

Would you kindly tell me where the setting is?

Thank you. Unfortunately with Android 14 the only option under
Wi-Fi calling is Use Wi-Fi Calling, on or off. The text under-
neath says "... depending on your preference and which signal is
stronger." It's the phone which decides which way any given call
is connected.

Strange, I'm on a Pixel 5a with Android 14 (UP1A.231105.001) and that
setting has been there for me since at least April when I moved from
VirginMobile to O₂

Hmm ... just checked and I'm running "Phone by Google (Beta)
v119.0.581780510-publicbeta" though I can't remember signing-up for the
beta.

Yes, the call log shows the icon on some calls.

So long since I looked at this.
I assume you get charged the same by your provider.

Yes, you provide the bandwidth and they charge you the same anyway, but
that charge is generally zero to start with (non-premium number,
unlimited minutes)

My build number is UP1A.231105.003. Do the 5a and 6a have
different processors?

118.0.582439719 here. Maybe that option will turn up on release

My SoC is Snapdragon 765G, I think with Pixel6 onwards they moved to
their own "Tensor" SoC?

Yes, the 6 family is Tensor. Probably accounts for the slight
difference in the build numbers.

Indeed; also wifi calling randomly doesn't work. Especially *incoming*
calls or sms doesn't turn it on.

I think it's only there for me because I have the beta version of the
phone app, which I didn't realise I had installed ...

With Airplane mode on and Wi-Fi on I find Wi-Fi Calling to be
completely reliable both incoming and outgoing using ASDA
(Vodafone). Perhaps your mobile signal is too strong to allow
Wi-Fi Calling to kick in. I'm hoping that the Phone app will
include the setting Andy Burns referred when it is next updated.

Phone has just been updated to version 119.0.586820070. Sad to
report that Wi-Fi calling is still only on or off. The Calling
Preference under Wi-Fi calling has not been added.
