Yes, that offer definitely wasn’t in the list yesterday. Not expecting it
to appear today, and to try and be helpful, I posted the other link
earlier. Since there’s no difference in price to the end user, I don’t have
any objection to such an affiliate link.

Yes, it’s a very good offer. I note Spusu allow you six months to activate
your SIM, so it might be worth getting one anyway, and see how things
develop with regard to the short-code issue.

One things that Spusu don’t offer, unlike e.g. 1p Mobile, is the ability to
purchase some form of data boost if you’re running short on data before
your next renewal. You can set a spending cap to cover this situation (but
they seem to be a little shy on saying what the costs are), or you can set
the cap to be £0:00, which in the case of you using up all your data
allowance, you lose your data connection until your next month starts. It’s
a bit of a guessing game for those that use more data than calls or texts.

Ah! Here are Spusu’s extra charges, which seem to be not unreasonable in
the UK:

=====
National cost limits
Calls & SMS
If you set your spending cap above £0.00, you will be charged the following
prices after you exceed your plan’s allowance: £0.04/minute, £0.04/SMS

Data
If you set your spending cap above £0.00, you will be charged the following
price if you run out of data: £0.004/MB

Roaming cost limits
If you set your spending cap above £0.00 while abroad, you will be charged
the respective roaming rate based on the country you are in. To find the
full list of our prices, you can check our Price Guide.

Network speed
Your allowance and paid-for data are provided at our top network speed. If
you have completely used up your plan’s data and reached your spending cap
limit, we will have to throttle your data speed to 64kb/s until the end of
the month. If you wish to keep using data at full speed, you will have to
increase the data spending cap.

I have just installed my Spusu sim and I have just received a sms code
to log into the app Signal, which is the one used by Spusu for support.

On a second though, the SMS might have been received by the Asda Mobile
card. I'll keep you posted on that.

Weird - I just go to the main site:

https://www.spusu.co.uk/plans

SIM received today. PAC code received. Plan to swap numbers later in
the week.

I signed up for an eSIM. It did not go well.

Did the signup process fine.

First of all I couldn't get to the place to scan the eSIM barcode - turned
out eSIMs were not enabled on my Pixel 7 Pro. Had to enable and reboot - my
fault.

Scanned the QR code for the eSIM, got the eSIM registered on my phone fine
(using O2 4G).

Had a good signal but couldn't get any connection to Spusu. I was at a
service station and would have thought that would be a place of reliable
connection, but who knows. You have to text them an activation code, but I
couldn't text it without a connection.

Got home and I had a Spusu connection, texted them the activation code -
text went through.

But SMS to others doesn't work - it says 'Can't send message with spusu -
error 111'. According to the internet that's a SIM card error. Spusu say
their eSIMs don't work on the Pixel 4(a) and 6(Pro), but don't report problems
with the 7 series.

Data also doesn't work and calls say 'network unavailable'. I also can't
re-text the activation code as I get error 111 for that too.

It could just be an eSIM thing. I'll leave it for a few days to see if
anything sorts itself out. Seems like I'm not the only one with eSIM
problems:
https://www.ispreview.co.uk/talk/threads/2-step-verification-messages-are-not-coming-through-to-phone.40189/

(I don't want to replace my physical SIM card, so for me it's eSIM or
nothing at this point)

It sounds like it may be worth holding off on Spusu for a while until
the get their teething problems sorted out. Hopefully it will
eventually turn out to be a network worth considering.

Is that the thing that's downloaded after scanning the QR code? It appears
to have provisioned the spusu SIM profile - it shows up as my second SIM, I
can toggle it for calls/SMS/data, they just don't work. It doesn't know my
spusu number in Settings->About phone, but it doesn't know my O2 number
either. There it shows that spusu has no signal (which may or may not be
true, I don't have another phone on EE to compare - but wouldn't have
expected 'error 111' in case of no signal).

The plot thickens. I had a play while at home and made some progress.

My phone 'preferred network type' for the SIM was set to '5G (recommended)',
at which point I couldn't get any connection. The same goes for 'LTE' and
'LTE only' (a GrapheneOS setting which disables 2G and 3G for security
reasons). SMS wouldn't go through any of them, and they all claimed no
signal. O2 4G worked fine.

But when I set the phone to 3G I could make calls and send SMS just fine.
Signal was good, but data didn't work.

I can also go into network selection and spusu shows as two entries - one
for LTE with good signal and one G for 2G GPRS with perfect signal. If I
select 2G I get good signal but can't send SMS or data. If I select LTE SMS
and data don't work. If I try to choose EE I am refused.

According to Spusu's coverage checker, I'm at the very edge of a 5G area,
have plenty of outdoor and indoor 4G and have zero 3G.

So it seems like their 4G is broken or out of signal, but it's preventing
the phone from dropping back to 3G or 2G - even just for calls and texts.

As to whether this is a local problem or not I'll have to find out next time
I'm out and about.

It seems Spusu's wifi calling support is only iPhone XR and later with iOS
17 and Samsungs from 2020 with Android 13, so no wifi calling for Pixels.
That would be a workaround for weirdness with signal, but not available for
me.

I don't actually need 4G data at home (I have wifi) but it would be handy
for SMS and calls to work over 3G or 2G without having to explicitly set that.
Although I wouldn't make it my main SIM until shortcodes from banks etc
work.

I solved it. Turned out there was no APN set (should be 'web'). It's been
so long that phones automatically pulled this from a database that I had
forgotten this was even a thing that needed to be set these days.

I'm getting about 11Mbps on 4G which is acceptable.
