Hi All,

I Just bought a “cheap” ticket to go up to Market Harborough from
Leatherhead (South of London) on 22nd December. I wanted something not tied
to a particular train…

Online said “No”

Ticket office man “No”

Ticket machine “Yes”

I am hoping to set off between 3:30 and 6:00 in the afternoon, does anyone
know if that would be ok on this Super Off Peak (or where I could check
online)?

Also, is it possible to reserve a seat online for the St Pancras - Market
Harborough leg?

It looks as if they're not valid from St Pancras from 15:35 until 18:46,
so you may have to set off at a different time. The return journey also
has morning restrictions.

I was told at one stage that the peak rules apply only to commencement
of the journey, and not to changes. Specifically, I was told that an
off-peak ticket from Kirkcaldy to Glasgow would allow a change during
the peak period at Haymarket. Maybe this is because Haymarket is not a
terminus but I thought the same rules applied as at Waverley.

Dahn Sarf,

I can’t use an Off Peak to travel to London Until 9:30….

However, using an Off Peak to travel up and through London before 9:30
doesn’t seem to be an issue. (Or maybe they were Advanced Singles rather
than Off Peak).

I have just managed to figure out how to get the Trainline web portal to
offer Super Off Peak AND show which services it thinks it is valid for.
And the first one it offers has me picking up the 19:05 at St Pancras.
That’s not a disaster, but its a bit naughty, as the (Southern) ticket
machine asked what time I was travelling, and I “said” 16:00 and it then
sold me the Super off peak.

Off peak (not super off peak) have no evening restrictions out of StP on
Fridays.

You got a ticket machine to sell you a ticket for 22 Dec? Is this a new
feature? I haven’t needed to buy a ticket for future travel recently (and
most the of the future tickets I buy need things like cycle reservations)
but knowing I could do it at the station without visiting the ticket office
would be an interesting option.

That's also why the ticket office man said "no"!

Many restrictions in especially the old NSE area apply to "trains
departing $terminus [or arriving at $terminus] between X and Y".
Irrespective of when you boarded the connecting train.

Different bit of the country, different rules

I received a block of random-looking characters. I assume that a MIME
header got removed at some stage, preventing automatic decoding in
recipients that didn't spot the problem and reinsert a standard header.

It came through nwith the correct headers to me:

Mime-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8; format=flowed
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64

The last of those is the key one, without that it wouldn't be decoded by the
client. But it was clearly there when it left the sender's system. Looking
back at those who said it arrived as base64, they're all on Eternal
September. So maybe ES managed to strip it, somehow.

To be clearer: I received a normal message from Robert, then a valid
message from Muttley quoting random garage. It's the transmission
from Robert to Muttley that lost the headers.

Robert’s arrived here perfectly readably; NewsTap Lite, Eternal September.

OK. Problem almost certainly at the recipient end, then.

Southern ticket machines have for some years (if not since introduction of
the “modern” machines had a “button” “Tickets for future travel”. But the
only way I was able to get a seat reservation was to go to a station (it
took the guy about 15 minutes! (i’m not sure the original guy I tried to
buy a ticket from would ever have figured it out)).

I suppose it may also be possible to do seat & cycle reservations on the
phone.

I’ll look at our local ticket machines more closely next time I travel. I
wasn’t expecting the machine to do the seat or cycle reservations, more
pointing out that on many of my journeys I expect to have to visit the
ticket office anyway.

I think so, but I live close to a large station so it’s not a major
difficulty anyway.

Now on the train.

EMR had suspended the after 18 whatever it was rule and so I could have got
the 18:05. but I couldn’t get a seat reservation.

Im on the 19:05 and there are quite a few unreserved seats, so I think
another time I will get on the earlier train and see if I can find one, and
if not, get off and wait for “my” train.

Still, St Pancras isn’t a bad place to while away a couple of hours.
