I'm replacing the drive belt on my 1.4 TSI Tiguan with twin chargers.

It all seems pretty straightforward EXCEPT how to get the belt between the alternator pulley and the adjacent tensioner pulley assembly.

A doc showing the engine and belt routing is here: http://www.volkspage.net/technik/ssp/ssp/SSP_359.pdf

For the life of me I can't work out if I have to take off the tensioner pulley assembly (it has two). Fingers crossed there is some old pro tip to help.

TIA.

Unlikely that you have to *remove* the tensioner. Does this help?

Thanks Tim - I had seen that little video already. It's quite a good one and shows how it would generally be a pretty easy job. However, mine has the supercharger as well as the turbo, so there is an extra tensioner pulley and it's this assembly which is ridiculously close to the alternator pulley.. So close, in fact, that I cannot feed in the belt between the two.

Cheers

On that video one tensioner can be held back in position using a pin. I
saw he used a screwdriver. That seems a common technique and a
Renault/Vauxhall/Opel 1.6 diesel has the same facility. It makes
threading the belt near child's play.

Are you sure your extra tensioner doesn't have the holes for a pin to
hold it back?

Spot on.... this is exactly what I wasn't doing. I made a bar from a 6 inch nail (so I could make it perfect length and width for next time) and it held back the tensioner perfectly. There's quite some tension on that thing, which is why I didn't pull it that far back, but clearly the holes/slots are designed for exactly that. Thanks. Job done now, engine running.
