Here's a look back at the stats for last year.

Important disclaimers: this is based on posts received by my news server, so
yours may not be quite the same. Contributors are based solely on distinct
"From:" headers, no attempt is made to combine stats for people who post
using different versions of their identity. Subjects are based solely on
distinct "Subject:" headers, again, no attempt is made to combine variants.
The software doesn't decode UTF8, this is a known bug that is still awaiting
the tuit supply to be topped up but, in the meantime, will affect the stats.
A maximum of 50 entries are shown in each section.

Thanks for that Mark.

It clearly shows that the quantity that a person posts does not mean
quality!
People low down the posting order have more interesting, and relevant
stuff to post than the top poster(s).

A tip for this year for everyone, if someone is a cock, just ignore
them. And trim/snip your replies.

There's some truth in that but also several exceptions. At the risk of
overlooking others, I'd single out Recliner as providing both quantity
and quality, especially when accompanied by a link to photographs.

Yes, my takeaway from Mark’s posting is that I should trim more.

Thank you, Mark.

I put the (s) there to not point at one person, but, TBH, I should have

I have two posters in mind. You can probably guess who they are.

Interesting stats, I'll add my 2p-worth.

Total-posts (of mine) are often dictated by me replying to being
dog-piled. Perhaps people could reign back on that.

I'm not top of the list for involvement in threads, which means I am
trying to concentrate on topics I'm interested in and can usefully
contribute, not just being a human megaphone.

Again, I start half as many threads as the leader, for the same reason.

And am *way* down the list for "quoted material", so I try hard to snip
out irrelevance when responding.

My lines-of-contributions are high, because unlike some others I don't
just point at a haystack, but try to provide a least some information
about where in the haystack to look, if not some kind of executive
summary.

As for "organisations" I'm almost the only person who has resolved not
to be what 'The Register' dubs an "anonymous coward".

Is that an American term — it seems to derive from American football, a
sport I know nothing about? You're the only user of it that I've ever come
across, but you seem to use it differently to the dictionary definition I
found.

A search finds this: https://www.dictionary.com/e/slang/dog-pile/

That just goes to show another area where you are profoundly ignorant.

That's exactly what I meant.

But here's an even more authoritative source:

12/key-issues/cyberstalking-and-cyberharassment.html>

He experienced what is known online as dogpiling (or a "pile
on"), where users within an online space bombard victims with
offensive, insulting, and threatening messages to silence the
target, force them to take back what they said and/or apologize,
or to force them to leave the platform. This tactic has been
practiced by Internet users all over the world.

But there's one good thing, this has finally made me decide I *will* get
solicitor to find out who you really are, and serve a "cease and desist"
letter. Perhaps time to stop digging yourself an even bigger hole.

Oh, lighten up, Roland! Typos are fun - no one’s criticising your
literacy.

You may be going through a difficult phase IRL but honestly, we aren’t all
out to get you.

And IWUC he’s in a trying and tragic personal situation at the moment, so
we should cut him some slack and encourage him not to take all this stuff
so personally.

Yes, agreed, and I do try, but he makes it difficult by aggressively
attacking anyone who responds to his posts.

I think I'll try not to reply to him at all, as he seems to regard replying
to any of his posts as 'stalking' and 'dog-piling' (whatever that is).

And that's supposed to be an acceptable response?

>>> Get in the real world you idiot. You are the one who is out of touch

Ditto. Or I suppose you could make the effort to say what exactly you
think I'm out of touch with, and why. Not "everything", obviously,
because you are not a subscriber to most of the places I post online.

>> And IWUC he’s in a trying and tragic personal situation at the moment,

In the context of Usenet, all that this affects is:

(a) An inability to (as some keyboard warriors demand) to treat it like
a chatline, because there may be several consecutive days I have other
things more important to do.

(b) My focus on the way railways are operated moves more from broken
TVMs, crazy pricing policies, and delayed trains, to why GN whose fleet
is supposed to be exclusively Electrostars, borrows a Thameslink rake so
the carriage with the wheelchair space is three away from where we might
expect it to be. People blocking the aisles and vestibules with cycles,
however, is equally applicable both now and then.

>>so we should cut him some slack and encourage him not to take all

It's very difficult not to take personal attacks, personally, whatever
the circumstances.

>Yes, agreed, and I do try, but he makes it difficult by aggressively

Rebutting personal attacks, is an attack? Really??

>I think I'll try not to reply to him at all,

I wish you would, but apparently you can't resist.

>as he seems to regard replying to any

No, only the abusive replies in ukr. There are dozens of other social
media 'forums' I am a member of, where absolutely no-one feels the need.

>of his posts as 'stalking' and 'dog-piling' (whatever that is).

I posted an authoritative cite. Have you still not read it?

There are times when money ceases to matter, and this is one of them.

Although I suspect I can find people to do it pro-bono because it will
make a good case study for them.

When I was doing training for the police, and other agencies interested
to understand how out of control online abuse was, it was easy to find
people to do research as an advert for their services, which were in
effect a kind of product-placement into those training courses of mine.

Here's a case study we did pro-bono:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoOSQwAjRsU

Much of the heavy lifting was done by forensic analysts we had
cultivated as business partners.

And guess what, although that's an old clip, at 5min7sec, every one of
those officers I had recently trained (we did about ten at a time, over
several months). As a different sort of IT expert I suppose.

Of course, the other skill is to get the story onto the couch. It took
the Horizon victims 20yrs to do that.
