What cities are found between Cardiff (in the south) and Edinburgh (in

You know one of the three answers.

Assuming you only want the pointless ones, my guesses would be Lisburn,

Before I look at a map, I’d hazard that St Davids might also be north of
Cardiff…

None of those, it was Ely (hurrah!) Chelmsford, and one other which I've
now forgotten (Norwich maybe).

St Davids is too well known as a pub-quiz answer to be "pointless".
That's part of the joy of the programme, the answers need to be better
than that.

That surprises me, because Ely is rarely pointless. Maybe people were
disregarding it because they think it's further south. Ditto Chelmsford.

I've not watched that episode yet but I'd go for St Asaph, Lichfield and
anywhere in Northern Ireland. Depending on the exact wording, we might
also include Moscow and Adak, Alaska.

Just looked at iPlayer - Roland is partially correct, the first board of
three pointless answers included Ely. However, there were two other
boards with pointless answers, a total of 9 pointless answers:
Chelmsford, Colchester, Ely, Lichfield, Milton Keynes, Ripon,
Southend-on-sea, St Albans and Westminster. Lots from NI were single
points as was either St Asaph or St Davids.

Must admit I was surprised at the Southend answer, must be a fairly
newly created city!

OK, so I still got one. Lichfield is the one that everybody forgets. It's
not a location that has any other claim to fame (unlike St Davids), and nor
is it among the outliers (eg, in NI) that geography nerds make a point of
memorising.

I wasn’t really trying to play, I was just checking my geography. I don’t
watch live TV or the BBC.

It is interesting how quite obscure answers have now learnt by people.
Any question on the names of elements brings out ones most have never
heard of, it happens so often that quite common elements can get low
scores because they get overlooked.

Lichfield has an unmissable transmitter and a rather nice cathedral.

Whilst I knew Southend was a (newly formed) city I'd have been hard
pressed to decide whether it was North or South of Cardiff.

I do find saying Milton Keynes City somewhat difficult.

It's clear that the "100 people" polled includes some regular Pointless
viewers. Once the contestants pick up on a frequent pointless answer, it
rapidly stops being pointless. It's caught contestants out too - give an
answer that's always been pointless in previous seasons, and end up
scoring 1 or 2.

Yes, it’s 0.09 degrees south of Edinburgh.

Pointless has several favourite themes such as "Name a country which..."
and "Name a chemical element which...". The show is responsible for the
man on the Clapham Junction train learning that Vanuatu and oganesson
exist, even if he can't locate them on a map or periodic table.

One day, people who don't do organised quizzes may even learn the U.S.
state capitals.

They seem to be trying a few new themes. One would be to name capitals
starting with letter C to P - you can almost guarantee that someone will
name one beginning with R!

It's an hour due north of London (by train, about 1.5hr by car) and I
think Cardiff is pretty much due west.

Ely isn't that far south of Peterborough which is famously just north of
Wolverhampton. Ely is due east of Coventry.

Southend is due east of London, and Chelmsford about half an hour north
(by road)

It's the aerials which are unmissable not the transmitter!
