Watching a bit of Trooping The Colour with subtitles on I noticed some
senior officers were called 'kernel'! AI would surely 'know' by the
context that it should be colonel.

Don't they use a form of Stenotype for live subtitling?

At some events they have the script and can just call that but that is
not possible with a live commentary like today.

I think the deaf accept it and are just glad to have subtitling.

The newspapers that often pick up minor mistakes, often have far more
mistakes themselves even though they have plenty of time to edit things.

Could be misconstrued as a windows file.

Perhaps the subtitler was thinking they must be all nuts doing that on a hot
day?
More likely it was cos nobody knew any better.
