Channel 5's new popular astronomy series, with Tim Peake.

As with many such prog.s, there are long sequences with nothing but
music, as we see views of planets, or the presenter striding over some
landscape.

But the audio description seems to overlap what little speech there is.

I suppose I (on behalf of those who need it) should be grateful there is
AD at all, and what it says is actually a good description of what's
going on.

Yes, not seen this one yet. If its on 5 it will be repeated quite quickly.
I'd really rather just have it from the hip without all the travelling
around the world that that other guy does with long silences. I guess I
might have another view if I could see though. I'm a bit annoyed there is no
real science show on the radio any more its all either climate change or
fluff.

What speech there was irritated me by his continued use of the ugly and
incorrect American pronunciation of kilometre. If this was a British
programme for British TV why didn't he use miles?

Because a significant percentage of the British population only know
about miles as a fictional unit as in "miles per gallon", and even for
that, car makers are now using "litres per 100 km". They haven't got a
clue how long a mile actually is, as their only connection is that you
do a bit more than a mile a minute on a clear motorway, but they do 5 or
10 kilometre steeplechases at school and all sports are now timed and
measured over metric distances.

If the programme is going to be sold in the USA, they use kilometres
(Sorry, kilometers) to make it feel like real science. It takes all the
fun out of it if they can understand it.

Probability of export sales, I guess.

I take it you mean stress on the o? I didn't notice. If you meet someone
who uses that and it bugs you, talk to them about centimetres with the
same stress. (And mis-stress their surname, too.)

Yes I'll ask them how many sen-TIM-iters tall are they and how many kill-

It's exactly 1 mile from my home to the Co-op. The little numbers in
my car say so.
