It's getting a little late in the conversation, but I might as well add
my 2¢ here. I have been using a Notes checklist for my shopping list. I
have the list arranged geographically based on my supermarket's layout.
I check what I need on a particular trip, and un-check the item when it
goes in the cart.

I noticed right away when I transferred that list to Reminders that the
check boxes work exactly opposite of what I'm used to, so I tried
flagging the items instead. Another problem, though not serious, is that
in my supermarket, different classes of frozen foods are kept in
opposite ends of the store.

I'll try Reminders next time I go shopping, but I'm pretty sure Notes
will remain my shopping list of choice.

For shopping I prefer Notes to Reminders.

IAC, I can't "update" my iPhone or Mac Reminders for the latest features
as my intel iMac and iPad would have to be up to some minimum OS v. So
it will be a few months before I cut the iMac loose. I can run the iPad
as an "independent" machine - won't matter much.

I feel so old...

We use a paper list which we add items to during the week as we notice
items something needs to be replenished. I carry the paper list with
me to the store and check off the item as it goes in the buggy. She
may take a picture of the list when she goes shopping.

What are we doing wrong?

Nothing...

....but there are advantages to using digital notes instead...

....such as the fact that either of you can add to something you both can
access.

It may not matter in your household, but how nice if two people could
each add to a list whenever needed and wherever they happened to be.

You could add to a list after someone had left to shop, or while you
were still at work. And you could see that an item on the list had been
checked off because your partner already got it.

Absolutely nothing wrong doing it that way! For me, that works
better than fiddling with a computer and phone. I did do a one
time bit of computer fiddling though ... I made a pdf file
containing a blank list with categories for each area, aisle,
type of items, etc. Like canned goods, beans and rice, dairy,
meats etc.; just for the store I use most. Then printed out a
bunch of copies.

I just add items as I run out of things.
It won't help if you go to many different stores though.

Chris Schram yes, a list like Reminders doesn't quite work if things aren't in the part of the supermarket it thinks they are. We used to have an app I forget what it was called but it let you make different categories for different stores and put them in the order you wanted so your lists were just right aisle by aisle for every store. But that app stopped working a few years ago.

That's why its great that there are so many apps and also paper--pretty much every body can find something that works good for them!
