There used to be a way to do that with iTunes, but I don't have it
installed any longer. It's possible Apple removed that functionality
to ensure people got programs from the App Store.

A few years ago nospam posted a link to an older version of iTunes
which could install .ipa files. Maybe a search through the archives
will provide results for you.

What reason would I have to avoid installing it from the App Store?

You can install IPA files with Apple Configurator, as I've written about
before here. But I much prefer using iMazing to do it these days as it's
much faster and reliable, and their licensing isn't subscription-based.
It's as simple as drag-and-dropping the file into the "Manage Apps"
window. iMazing is also multi-platform. Recommended.

Maybe a computer-based phone manager app like iMazing, but it may well
be that installing non-App Store .api files cannot be done unless you
JailBreak the device.

Jail breaking is not required. All you need is the IPA file and iMazing.

Does that mean that you can sideload any app that is not and was never
approved for the app store just using the imazing app and the ipa for the
app which was downloaded off a developer's web site without testflight?

It seems to depend on who you want to beleive - some people say yes,
some people say no.

Two other computer-based phone manager apps that may or may not be able to are:
- Cydia Impactor
- iMobie AnyTrans

The reality is that the security system is part of iOS, so there's no
way an unofficial app can be run on an iPhone without either
JailBreaking or official app signing. Even Apple's new "loosening" of
the the rules to allow "third-party app stores" (to appease EU whiners)
still requires the apps to be properly signed by Apple.

It's probably not even worth the effort, especially if the app is on
the App Store anyway.
