My son's iPhone 12 died so he now has an iPhone 15. I finally got it
home and plugged it in. The screen is light green and has an Apple
logo. There is a thin white vertical line on the left side of the
screen. Every five seconds the screen blacks out then comes back to
the green screen. It also makes no noise or indication that power has
been connected. I can't really tell if it's charging or stuck in an
infinite boot up load.

Feel free to diagnose and troubleshoot.

I think you're supposed to take it to an apple "store", and pay to have it
fixed with genuine apple blessed parts.

But it sounds like you already took the best apple approved method: Buy new
shit and discard the defective unit.

Oh, yeah, forgot to mention. It was not apple's fault the phone crapped
out. Either you or your son must have destroyed a perfectly good apple
phone. But apple will repair it for a reasonable cost. They are kind
hearted that way.

The first thing to do - as always - is power down/restart, just as you would
with any computer when it starts getting flaky. Its called a "hard reset" for
an iPhone. It has solved several weird issues for me over the years. Easy to
find instructions for that.

If that does nothing then take it to Apple.

Can’t do it. Can’t even get an indication if it’s accepted the charging
cable.

The nearest Apple store is 25 miles away past new underwater tunnel
construction. With the massive and unpredictable traffic backups it's
not worth my time.

Right now the old phone is in my wastebasket, unless someone has a
suggestion on how to restart it or wipe it clean.

It's faulty. Take it back from where you/he bought it and get a refund.

Would they give me a refund for model that's three versions old and
purchased 3+ years ago?

Presumably you've tried the hard reset:

- Press and quickly release the volume up button.
- Press and quickly release the volume down button.
- Press and hold the side button.
- When the Apple logo appears, release the side button.

Another option is to plug the iPhone into a computer and use the
Restore option in iTunes. On newer Macs without iTunes, the option is
via the Finder.

The Green Screen of Death is often a sign of a hardware issue, so the
only real option is probably taking it to an authorised repair shop.
Even then, the likelihood is that it's not worth the cost of the repair.

I agree that the device is toast. He's done the only logical thing and
pitched it in the trash and bought another.

But we must realize that this failure is not due to any evil action by
apple. They are clean as the driven snow, and had no part in the phone's
failure. Too often apple gets blamed for things than they never did.

With any product, there will be a few individual items that fail
prematurely, though most are fine. Statistically, You might buy the best
widget and happen to get one that's doa, right out of the box. Chalk it up
to shitty luck, not evil apple.

Did he buy the new phone? Has he been able to use it before you plugged it
in? If not why not?

I meant the new phone is faulty. Oh wait? Is your description purely about
the 12. The 15 is working fine. Right? If that's the case take it to Apple
or other reputable repair and see what they say.
