i've never used email any more than necessary but i've read that
gmail is notoriously spammy . . . couldn't be nearly as horrible
as google groups was . . . could it? is gmail really that putrid?

Can't it be "We don't care" attitude? I personally perceive it mostly
as incompetence and arrogance of "Too Big to Fall" class.

I find Google practices unfit for me quite frequently.
I merely means that I am not theirs target group
and I accept it *fully* .

Gmail is very good about filtering incoming spam, and reasonably okay
about filtering outgoing spam. There is still a good bit of spam from
gmail, but considering how many users they have it's not very much at
all.

Gmail is actually attended... there are armies of people behind the
scenes fine-tuning things and watching things. Google Groups is not
this way.

Gmail is actually a revenue source for Google, although they do offer
a whole lot of free accounts. Because it is a revenue source they take
good care of it.

I recall reading that Google won't be archiving new
postings after pulling out from Usenet. I suspect
they see Usenet as a dying technology that's being
abused by a lot of spammers.

I like the Usenet technology. Sure, it would be
great to have some additional features to prevent
forgeries and deal with abusive posters, but
overall I think Google is ultimately sacrificing
long-term name brand recognition by pulling out of
Usenet, and I suspect their Google Groups platform
could suffer too since it's pretty basic compared
to the offerings of many web-based forums.

GMail users who aren't accustomed to checking the
junk folder for legitimate eMail sometimes complain
to senders that they never received the eMail that
was sent to them. It's a strategy that many free
webmail providers use to claim a spam-free inbox,
but it comes at the cost of junking legitimate
messages from senders who haven't been whitelisted
(which may also serve as an example of how a pure
technology-based anti-spam solution can't solve a
human problem, at least not entirely).

GMail also has many users who send spam, and on a
daily basis some of them also try to sell (whatever
it is they claim to be selling) to our spamtraps as
well as our users. The volume of spam received
also varies from one user to the next (ditto for
spamtraps). Google has a vast user base, so it's
certainly a significant challenge.
