"LibreOffice is a powerful and free office suite, a successor to
OpenOffice(.org), used by millions of people around the world. Its clean
interface and feature-rich tools help you unleash your creativity and
enhance your productivity. LibreOffice includes several applications
that make it the most versatile Free and Open Source office suite on the
market: Writer (word processing), Calc (spreadsheets), Impress
(presentations), Draw (vector graphics and flowcharts), Base
(databases), and Math (formula editing)."

I see they insist on the inexplicable privacy issue I posted
about.
The new default is to send EVERYTHING you type to data
brokers....
Someone is going to make a LOT of money with that.

which I presume refers to this:

https://help.libreoffice.org/7.6/en-US/text/shared/01/06040000.html?&DbPAR=SHARED&System=WIN

Couldn't a person simply block the program from calling out by using a
firewall?

John C. BS206. No ad, CD, cripple, demo, nag, pay, pirated, share, spy,
time-limited, trial or web wares for me please.

So I don't see them, I filter out:
-crossposts (sent to multiple newsgroups) at a time
-posts sent via Google Groups*
-Uzoreto (AKA "Vipernews", another source of spam) posts
-trolls (egs. Mick Finnlay, "Bucky Breeder" and his many sock puppets,
etc.)

If you do the same, it will make the group more readable for you.

*If you're using Google Groups, you'll be unseen by most regulars in
this newsgroup. Eternal-September no longer propagates posts from this
source to this newsgroup because of large amounts of spam being sent
through it. You should use another free newsfeed like this one instead:

Me, FWIW.
I tracked it with Wireshark. It connects regardless of if you
have spellcheck enabled or disabled. The new online spellcheck is
ENABLED by default.
To block it, just add the spellchecker domain to your hosts
file:

<api.languagetool.org>

PS John, no need for a firewall rule. It only connects to that
host.
No biggie. Just mildly annoying.

Enable Languagetool

The Base URL is set to default URL as you describe.

If you delete URL and apply it puts the URL back.

But if you put in say https://banana.invalid and apply it sticks. Do that.

Disable Languagetool,test and report back.

I would test it myself if:

1) I could be arsed

2) If I ran a hardened, superior OS but I only have Windows 10 & 11 &
Linux here.

Obviously, if it tries to connect to a banana we can alert the rebels
and sleep soundly knowing that we have freed the world.

Take care. An AI is involved. No really.

Well it's not enabled here at Cat HQ by default on Windows 10 or 11 in
LibreOffice 7.5 or 7.6 so I'm a bit disappointed. "I saw some
complaints" wins the LOL award for your lack of rigor. Well done.

Not really. If it isn't used until enabled it's no bother. Otherwise,
it's helpful.

Well that's not very helpful because if you could be arsed to test it we
would know if that's the source of the URL you allege is used or whether
it's hardcoded. Never mind. I'm sure there's an art student somewhere
out there that can do a better job of formulating a credible bug report.

I went to Art School and I had a long and successful career in IT. I
also had a long and successful career in advertising. I know, I've got
it all, the looks, the brains, and the fur. Talent oozes from every pore

It's disabled here (LO 7.6.3, Linux Mint 21.2).

Some legal stuff: https://languagetool.org/legal/privacy

Users can install an extension instead: "Starting with LibreOffice
7.4, LanguageTool can be used from LibreOffice without this add-on.
However, there are some reasons to use the extension:
The extension runs on the local machine. No remote server is
needed.(...)"
https://extensions.libreoffice.org/en/extensions/show/languagetool

However, the extension needs the Java runtime environment, which users
can (de)activate in the LO settings.
So if you want to use LanguageTool (I don't), you have to choose
between the online version or the extension+JRE. It's the user's
choice.

test this.

Libreoffice 7.5 on Windows 10.

If you turn the Languagetool server off in options. It doesn't send
anything. If you turn it on it does.

Exactly what automatic spell checking is in Libreoffice I dunno but
spell checking as you type doesn't seem to use the remote server. It
uses the local dictionary.

The only time it makes a connection to the Languagetool server is when
you manually spellcheck and then it seems to only check grammar unless
you have turned the local spellchecker off when in addition it seems to
check the spelling.

All in all I found it a bit slow.

So there you go. You have a credible source. Have a nice day.

What? The nice day? I thought cats always wanted their slaves
to have a nice day.

Not me. I wouldn't touch Fedora with a bargepole.
Note he also had spellcheck DISABLED. Still it phoned home.

If you put the languagetool api domain in your /etc/hosts file
it DOES resolve. To localhost. LibreOffice is happy. And so am I.
Dunno why the guy made so much fuss over it.

Hmm. I'm have LibreOffice portable on my Win 10. The Languagetool
server is off, *by default*. If you want privacy, why turn the option on?

This dog does not use it, yet. But when I purchase my next laptop, I
will use it instead of MS Office, as I no longer have access to a free
MS Office (academic) license through the university server.

You don't want to be worrying your pretty little head about such
matters. Rest assured that Libreoffice is programmed and hosted by a
close knit team of angels resident in Kubla Khan. It's free as in liege.
See vassal.

I have been on that journey. Years of pain lie ahead for you apostle.

Some of us wonder why you made such a fuss over it or have you forgotten
your wild conspiracy theories already?

Anyway, the *bug* born with alleged evil intent has been 'fixed' on that
most holy of operating systems. I say 'fixed' because the discussion
here seems focused on LO hanging when DNS doesn't resolve and not on
whether it attempts to connect irrespective of whether languagetool is
enabled or not.

https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=158093

Fixed? I do hope so. Those of us sensitive to these issues i.e. JC and
Shit the cat may need counseling after this furore. Have you considered
toning down your headline grabbing accusations in future. This isn't the
website of a popular culture tabloid. We have standards here.

There is a paranoid ondertone in your reply. I have learnt long ago not
to argue with paranoids.

Give the choice of paying to be spied on (MS Office) vs using a freebie
(LibreOffice) - which may or may not spy on me - I'd rather go with the
latter. After all this is what ACL is all about.

P.S. Why would a piece of software offer the option of switching on or
off an option (LanguageTool server), if it plans to spy with it anyway?
Just a thought, or another hook to hang your paranoid thoughts on?

Dunno where you got that idea, I was just rather abstractly perhaps,
proffering my opinion that MS Office is worth every penny. OEM at £25
per year ish say is peanuts for software of that quality. Excel alone
can make or save you a lot of money. Something worth getting out of bed
for. Calc is OK but it's clunky. Excel is like a well worn welly. It's
comfy and gives you space to think. Help is just a Google away and
there's loads, megatons of it. 'It's so empowering' in the modern
parlance of the pokey pokey smartphone warriors. Bless them. Outlook is
the best. Thinking about using anything else is just plain horrid, and
Word is really excellent now for documentation. No more txt files for

Oh dear, so MS definitely spies on you but LibreOffice may or may not.
It never ceases to amaze me how the word 'Free' enslaves minds so
quickly. I fear we may have lost you. Worse, you may have lost yourself.
Everyone is spied on. Hiding is practically impossible.

> P.S. Why would a piece of software offer the option of switching on or

I never thought this option was spying on anybody. That came from the
one born from the exclusion of light. Spot the deliberate allegory. It's
just a bug on the cult OS version. For spy catchers with paranoia look
for the usual suspects.

> Just a thought, or another hook to hang your paranoid thoughts on?

Free is not always the cheap or best option. Listen to Pooh.

I've got a RPi set up with Pi-Hole, so it acts as a DNS. I've opened
Writer, typed some words with the auto spell check enabled. I don't see
<api.languagetool.org> in the logs.

Updated to the latest version today. With all the "bugfixes".
This is what I get, after commenting languagetool in my /etc/hosts and
opening a blank Calc spreadsheet. There was nothing to spellcheck.

PS LibreOffice does not run under XP. That's my Debian (Devuan)build.
I could probably debugger it better under XP.

Your second screenshot: this was already disabled (by default), so I
guess that's why I'm not seeing anything. I'm using 7.6.3.2 under W11.

Nope. When I saw it phoning home a couple of builds back, I
disabled it. It was ENABLED by default.
And still it phoned home.
So I put it in my /etc/hosts file.
(which I commented out for this test).

I'm on 7.5.9 (I think). Whatever it was, it updated today and
was a "privacy/security" bugfix.

I did say but you obviously don't parlez cat. They weren't fixing what
you thought they were fixing.

Here is a translation from English into English

"Anyway, the *bug* born with alleged evil intent has been 'fixed' on
that most holy of operating systems. I say 'fixed' because the
discussion here seems focused on LO hanging when DNS doesn't resolve and
not on whether it attempts to connect irrespective of whether
languagetool is enabled or not.

https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=158093"

Is this an example of the legendary support Yrrah is always going on about?

Anyway, in precis for those with a short attention span it sounds like
they fixed the hanging bug but not the issue you are all rattling on
about. You could take a trip over there and ask them nicely.
