Hello, quick leafnode configuration question:
I have a very slow local server that I want to connect to via leafnode.
Is there a way to configure the access to it to only check for specific
groups on it?
I assume this could be defined in config with

(from config example:) only_groups_pcre = corel\.

Can I just give the names of all the newsgroups I want to have in here
or do I have to use proper pcre notation here?

e.g. I want to have rec.games.frp.dnd
would that be
rec\.games\.frp\.dnd ?

From distant memory: you don't have to specify any groups in leafnode,
just subscribe to the groups you want using server: localhost and
leafnode will fetch just those groups as required. I think on first
connection there will be nothing in the group but leafnode will then
collect articles from that group for your client's second connection.

I may be wrong about this; if so, I'm sure that an expert will be along
shortly to correct me.

Yes, but I was wondering if I still could only query specific groups on
the server. The way it seems to work normally is that all the groups are
being queried, even if the result is that the group does not exist on
the server.
Normally that's not a problem, but I was trying to make it work with the
Newslink plugin in the Synchronet BBS, and that one is slow. It took the
better part of two hours to go through all the groups I queried from
Eternal September in 2 seconds, and it still wasn't finished when I
cancelled it.

If the Newslink plugin in the Synchronet BBS is that slow it may be
unusable. How does leafnode perform if it's fetching from e.g.
Eternal-September? I certainly wasn't aware of any great delays
when I was using it some years ago.

Leafnode is fine, the same request went through all the groups on
Eternal September in one or two seconds.
I think the Newslink plugin only works properly when it builds the
connection itself. I haven't seen issues with that so far. (well, I
noticed threads get broken).
I do notice that using it as a news server is fraught with problems
though. The connections made to it reset all the time.
I might have to give up on that particular idea and just try to get INN
working.
