Some SE and other online Forums are run by dictators

I once saw a post on Reddit advertising novabbs, just saying "Check this
out, it's a Usenet web forum"

That thread got locked and the mod comment was something like "Don't post
links to sites that are illegal. The admin is breaking the TOS of his news
server by letting people post on his site.

I posted that I'm the admin of novabbs and I'm also the admin of the news
server, so I'm not breaking any rules.

That got me banned, lol :)

It's like some people look up USENET, read the Wikipedia page, see the
"Legal issues" section, then freak out.

Sadly most redditors don't even know IRC. Ditto with 'hackernews'.
For them, it only exists IRC and Discord/Slack. They don't even
or want know about Jabber.

It's been called XMPP since the early 2000s and although I don't know of
anyone who actually *uses* it, any time there's an online discussion of
newer federated chat systems like Matrix, you end up with a handful of
posters bursting in to talk about how XMPP was totally better once you
installed the appropriate grab-bag of extensions.

mainstream media is strictly commercial, catering to those inside the system,
thus has always been strictly controlled by those that control the narrative;
whereas, unmoderated usenet newsgroups are all-inclusive, meaning even those
outside the system may participate, and lurkers could outnumber contributors
and participants by a wide margin; unmoderated is synonymous with uncensored

There were (American) concerns about newsgroups where pedophiles
(supposedly) were sharing their stuff. I don't remember what the
newsgroups were called, but there were indeed at least 2 of those
newsgroups.

Providers quickly took the chance of getting rid of their access to
Usenet completely and in doing so they got rid of a lot of (illegal)
download traffic that was going on in other newsgroups.

They could have blocked access to those specific newsgroups, but it was
never really about that.

/r/usenet is almost exclusively for piracy. there's a second subreddit
called /r/ClassicUsenet which deals with the text groups.
I did encounter some people in /r/usenet who were unaware that Usenet
started as a text medium and that the text parts still exist.
....which to be fair is not that hard to believe considering some of the
newer leechers I checked out had no way to even post text posts anymore.
At least none I could find.

Yeah, I remember some news coverage in Germany that included the usenet
and how terrible it was that you could get pornography in there. I think
it really drove the whole narrative of the internet being the seedy side
of culture, especially coming from newspapers and tv stations.
