copying an entire hour or more long video is too time consuming. I
want to copy only a few minutes of it.

I did have a program which did that but it stopped recording the sound
of the video. Can't figure out why. It did that on both my Win 7 and
on my XP machine.

?

I should have said that it's a screen capture program which I need to
capture only a portion of an online video.

Hi Carl !

If you like a command line tool so take ffmpeg.

For windows :
Write a little commandfile for instance "capture.bat"
like :

ffmpeg -f dshow -i audio="Stereomix (Realtek(R) Audio)"\
-f gdigrab -framerate 36 -i desktop out.mp4
pause

Start your video on the PC.
Start capture.bat
minimize capture.bat
Stop capture.bat with Control-C
and type return.
Enjoy your video out.mp4

Ther are a lot of options like framerate.

Regards
Reinhard

I got one from the nirsoft site - Replay Video Capture - which works.
It does costs $$, but it works.

This one has worked for me for a long time:

https://github.com/mifi/lossless-cut

Unfortunately, the home page is on the dreaded and hated Github, which
is deliberately made confusing because Microsoft owns it. Microsoft
wants everybody to start installing third party software via their
"Microsoft Store" nonsense, so they've deliberately made it as confusing
as possible to find the download link on Github so that you'll be forced
into using their "Store".

Nonetheless, for now if you want to download the program you can do so
via Snapfiles here:

https://www.snapfiles.com/get/losslesscut.html

And ignore the complaints about the UI. As video editing programs go,
this one has about the easiest interface I've seen.

Github was a navigational mess long before Microsoft bought it.

This is true. However, M$ could have changed that for the better and didn't.
