Is there something more in an .msi file than can be extracted using a
zip archival tool (e.g., 7-zip, Peazip)?

Or, how about using msiexec.exe to extract the contents, like:

msiexec /a pkg.msi

or

msiexec /a pkg.msi /qb TARGETDIR="c:\myfolder"

I wasn't aware of the msiexec command, but I do know that 7-zip does not extract contents from an MSI file.
I just tried it again, and most of the extracted files (41 files in all ) begin with a "!".
For the .MSI I tried, there should have been 3 usable files to extract, like there was with Less MSIérables (lessmsi).

I used Peazip which is a fork of 7-zip to extract files out of an .msi
installer file for my e-mail client. Opened the .msi as an archive in
Peazip, selected all files and folders, and extracted to a temp folder.
That created 131 files in 9 folders.

I then used msiexec to do the same. That created 1731 files in 98
folders. msiexec definitely did a better job.

Went to https://github.com/activescott/lessmsi, but didn't see compiled
Windows executable to download. The .zip download gives the source code
that I'd have to compile. Mentions having to use their "chocolatey
package" to install. On Windows? And having to use Powershell? No
thanks. Was hoping their mention of a command-line tool meant its was
already compiled and portable.

I'll stick with msiexec to extract the files.

There has been a new release in the last 24 hours.
With all the changes and the much larger size, I will continue to use v1..11.3.
If you want to download it, the first choice under "Assets" for each release is "Zip of lessmsi application binaries".
For v1.11.3, the download is https://github.com/activescott/lessmsi/releases/download/v1.11.3/lessmsi-v1.11.3.zip

The advantage of lessmsi is that you can see the files before
extracting.

And with SuperOrca, you can see a whole lot more than files. Too much than
what you might want.

I downloaded it. (SuperOrcaSetup.exe v11.0.0.1, SHA1

ExeInfoPE says it's 8 bit DOS, Jotti gives it as 16bit DOS and

WTF. It seems like the download from the official site got corrupted. It was
not the same file as when I downloaded it a few years ago.

The original good download can be retrieved from the archived site. (long
URL warning)

https://web.archive.org/web/20141008181056/http://www.pantaray.com/SuperOrcaSetup.exe

Size : 2,926,519 Bytes

It's basically an MSI data manager. Kind of like LessMSI without the "less"
or not a lightweight version.

FYI, SuperORCA can remove software installation requirement which is done at
software installer level (which is defined in the MSI file). IOTW,
add/modify/remove specific installation task(s). Of course, if you know what
to look, where to look, what to change, and how to change. IMO, it's an
advanced-level tool.

Ah, thank you. It's Delphi ~7, and the checksums match.
Jotti says it's clean. Will test on the next MSI I need to
examine.
