Hi,

I decided to try tin again, but I'm having a lot of issues. Right now,
the menu is completely empty.. how do I subscribe to newsgroups?

Help ('h') is context dependent.

In short, on the 'Group Selection' page, use 'g' (group) to find a
group in the active file and then use 's' (subscribe) to that group.

Realized I wasn't authenticating too (-A flag) and now its hanging on
"reading groups from active file" before crashing from an nntp
connection error..

Another note is that when just running tin -r, it does work partially.
You have to manually fetch the ng, which I didn't realize, but it's
still limited to the e-s hierarchy. Also, it still crashes when trying
to enter one. I think it *might* be an issue with server timeout? since
after it crashes the e-s connection refuses for a bit.

It's definitely something with the timeout, using -t to lengthen it
makes it exit faster/shorter.

Well, I figured out the issue. Seems that news.eternal-september.org is
VERY unreliable, switching off to reader80.eternal-september.org:80
fixed everything up.

hello from slrn!
now i have to transfer all my ng's over from thunderbird yay

So you've given up on Tin or you're trying out Slrn in combination?
In case Tin is still of interest, I suspect you needed to press 'y'
to toggle between display of all groups and subscribed groups. When
showing unsubscribed groups (with 'u' on the left), you can press
's' to subscribe to them.

Also if you're starting Tin with the "-n" or "-Q" options, only
group names that you're already subscribed to will be read from
the news server, so no others can be shown. That's what I normally
do, and only grab the full group list if I'm interested in looking
for new groups. If I read of a group that I want to check out
without downloading the full newsgroup list, I just manually edit
..newsrc and add it (when Tin isn't running), to avoid wasting my
internet data.

I tried Slrn once and couldn't get the hang of it. Different
software suits different people, I suppose.

The issue was entirely fixed by just switching the server, but I do
prefer slrn's ui to tin
