Microsoft will pay $20 million to settle Federal Trade Commission charges
that it violated the Childrens Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) by
collecting personal information from children who signed up to its Xbox
gaming system without notifying their parents or obtaining their parents
consent, and by illegally retaining childrens personal information.

Our proposed order makes it easier for parents to protect their
childrens privacy on Xbox, and limits what information Microsoft can
collect and retain about kids, said Samuel Levine, Director of the FTCs
Bureau of Consumer Protection. This action should also make it abundantly
clear that kids avatars, biometric data, and health information are not
exempt from COPPA.

"Microsoft makes $543.2M in a day."

No matter what metric you use, the $20M fine is pocket change.

It's well known in industry, that it "always pays to sin".

I no longer consider it irony, or even a novelty, it's a fact of life.
It's part of business plans (put aside 1% for fines).

Now the EU occasionally levies some sweet fines.
They get it. Don't allow them to profit from their sin.
An EU fine is "signaling". It means "don't fuck with us".
The amounts can be seemingly arbitrarily large, and this
means a miscreant will think twice before entering
the "fine levying casino".

And I think to a large extent, their signaling works.
The CEO sits up in his chair, when the EU calls. And
that's because some of the fines are visible to shareholders
and make them say "hey, wait a minute".

I'm surprised a $20M fine is even a news item.

This posting of irrelevant "news" crap has ruined many groups.

If we want to read "news" we'll go to our favorites to open some
"news" sites.

This group is for info on Win 11, not old "news".

The only group relevant to this posted crap would be alt.privacy, and
certainly not the anon-server group, you x-posting moron.
