I have tried: Cmd Prompt, Safe Mode, add to Archive(.ZIP),
Rename....all fail...File not found, This is no longer located in***
File Properties...Security tab: X The requested security information
is either unavailable or can't be displayed. chkdsk G:, no errors.

I'm at a loss.....any recommendations would be appreciated.

Try using single quote instead of double quote! Powershell sees double
quote differently. You might wanna use good old Command Prompt if you
wanna use double quote.

del 'G:\Downloads\alt.binaries.multimedia.\Apartment Complex'

What are the permissions on it? And do you own it with write permissions?

There are 6 Directories on that drive. All display the same
error....Permissions? no Permissions for any
user...>Properties>Security....displays a big Red X "The requested
security information is either unavailable or can't be displayed"
Looks like I'm getting close to formatting that drive, really don't
want to go there.

How do you know the file exists? You've tried to delete the file, but
you haven't shown that it exists to then delete.

What is the G: drive? Internal, removable, what? Is it a USB drive?
Flash drives have a limited number writes. Each write is destructive.
Eventually the drive catastrophically fails.

You mention "chkdsk g:", but that just does a file system check, not an
integrity check. Did you try "chdksk g: /r" to check all sectors for
readability?

In the 'del' command, you have a period after "alt.binaries.multimedia",
but the error message does not. Filenames and folder names cannot end
with a period (or trailing space). No idea what file system is on the
G: drive (FAT32, NTFS, exFAT, or what). The file system may support a
trailing period in filenames, but the OS does not.

Under DOS/Windows, the dot is used to separate filename from extension.
If there is no extension, there should be no final dot. A trailing dot
would mean there is no extension, so the trailing dot gets discarded
since it is /NOT/ part of the filename. Linux may allow a trailing dot
since there is no concept of extensions on folder or file names, but you
are asking in a Windows newsgroup. Is there really a trailing dot? Was
the folder or file created under Linux?

Right click on drive icon and under tools select Error Checking then do
a dir of the folder and see what it contains.

chkdsk /f g: # This stands for Fix if you find errors.
# But it also corrects things which are not errors ($MFTMIRR)

You can get a copy of nfi.exe and list the path and filename of each item.

https://web.archive.org/web/20150223112102/http://download.microsoft.com/download/win2000srv/utility/3.0/nt45/en-us/oem3sr2.zip

nfi.exe g: > x:\nfi_g_out.txt

notepad x:\nfi_g_out.txt # Open in Notepad and search for your groupname

The voidtools.com program "Everything.exe", also
has the ability to list files in $MFT and I presume
the author of the program understands wide characters
and exotic character choices.

Everything -create-filelist every_g.txt "G:"

notepad every_g.txt

In some cases, you may have to pop those .txt files
into a hex editor, to check for anomalies. I once had
a string copied from a Win10 file system, where two
of the characters, not only was Thunderbird unable to
render the characters, it did not even leave a "space"
to represent it was having a problem with the character.
There are characters which are so miserable, they can
only be spotted in a hex editor.

https://mh-nexus.de/en/hxd/

As Van points out, a "trailing dot" is bad news. Sometimes
people write software, which seems to be able to insert things
into the file system that do not belong. I think I used Perl
once, to remove an item that File Explorer would not remove.
They have since fixed File Explorer so that bug is no longer
present.

When your file system breaks, you get to play with lots of tools
in response.

Or a partition on several multi-partition internal drives (which could
be HDD or SSD).
Or a USB flash drive. And perhaps one that locks with a switch or
software to block changes.
Or an internal optical drive.
Or a Google drive.
Or ...

Chief has not yet revealed just what is G:. He also has not revealed
under which OS all those folders and files were created, especially
since Windows wouldn't allow a trailing dot (it would get discarded).
Chief has not revealed if the dot is actually part of the folder name,
or something he manually specified and accidentally added the trailing
dot in his 'del' command.

Chief reminds me of micky: lack of details he deems irrelevant.

Makes me recall that it is possible to insert characters into a folder
or filename that the OS will not handle, like NUL characters. Spammers
and scammers like to insert illegal characters into filenames to prevent
their deletion, and the same with registry entries. I recall a long
time ago having to use HexEdit to edit the file system to see there were
illegal characters, and to remove them. Don't remember if it was
HexEdit, or another registry editor (not regedit.exe), to get rid of
illegal characters in registry entry and key names.

If NULs are added (programmatically, not via the UI provided by the OS),
you won't see them. You can manually enter the filename, or even copy
to paste it, but the NULs aren't included in the correct spots, so what
you enter cannot be found. The user cannot add a NUL character to a
filename, but a program can. I've even seen anti-virus programs using
the NUL trick in key names to prevent casual deletion by users.

HexEdit is overkill trying to edit the MFT to get rid of NUL, and other
illegal characters, in filenames. Know of any santizer tools that strip
illegal chars from a filename to replace with a string of legal chars?

This has been interesting, lots of comments, but none helpful. Thanks
for the reply.
G:\ a Win11 NTFS 200GB partition on a 1TB drive. I have not one, BUT
5 directories on that partition with the same error. They cannot be
deleted or viewed (opened).

Attempt to view the contents of the Directory generate this error...
G:\Downloads\Alt.Binaries.Mutimedia\IBW-881 is unavailable. If the
location is on this PC, make sure the device or drive is connected or
the disk is inserted, and then try again. If the locations is on a
network, make sure your connected to the network or internet, and then
try again. if the location still can't be found, it might have been
moved or deleted.

Attempt to delete the directory returns this error:
Could not find this item. This is no longer located in
G:\Downloads\Alt.Binaries.Mutimedia\ verify the item's location and
try again.

Attempt to "take ownership"....Properties>>"Security tab": Error: X
the requested security information is either unavailable or can't be
displayed.

Delete directory in Safe mode: Could not find this item.

Win11 Safe mode..... CMD Prompt.....The system cannot find the file
specified.

ChkDsk...no errors found

Looks like my first guess is the only option...format G:/

According to this, a CHKDSK run can remove a file which has an illegal name.

https://superuser.com/questions/31587/how-to-force-windows-to-rename-a-file-with-a-special-character

Either it is deleting the file, or, it is sticking it in lost+found.

If the file system is FAT32, the check routine for that might not
work exactly the same as the NTFS one does.

I figured if you were interested enough to come back and say it's still
happening, you might be interested enough to find out why? But go ahead
reformat it ...

G:\ is fixed. No more Chasing Rabbits. Copied the contents to a
Flash Drive, minus the corrupt directories. That was pretty easy, the
copy process would not copy the corrupt directories. Format G: then
copied it all back to the drive. Newsbin V5.3 is running just fine
now.
