I have a SSD connected to the computer via powered hub....
USB-DS12 Sabrent USB 3.0 TO SSD SATA IDE 2.5" 3.5"
5.25" HDD Converter W/ Power Supply & LED
Activity Lights...

Every now and again these's a beep from the computer.

This corresponds to the large spike on the disk graph..
https://postimg.cc/WDWtLp50
and this seems the only way the SSD is being accessed.

I have done scans and no disk errors are reported.

Is this a disk problem?

P

Plug in the 12V 2A adapter.

+-------------------------------- 12V \
| \
12V @ 2A -------+------ XL1513 E1 --------------- 5V \__ white 1x4 connector
Wall Buck Converter ? GND / as well as SATA 15 pin
Adapter Probably 12V | GND /
to 5V @ 2A max |
(no cooling) |
|
USB +5V |
Bus power ??? -----------------------------+

Obviously, the SATA SSD does not use 12V, but the
wall adapter can power the XL1513 buck converter.

It is unclear, looking at the PCB of the Sabrent,
how bus power gets to a SATA drive, if at all.

If you are running off bus power, and you have more
than one heavy load on the USB3 stack on your computer,
maybe that is why the power is going off.

The XL1513 does not have a thermal slug. On the PCB of the
adapter, a lot of via stitching is used around the XM1513,
to emulate a heatsink, but because the body of the adapter
is plastic, it's all a bit silly from a cooling perspective.
The XL1513 has thermal protection, and that's a reason if the
adapter is plugged in and the drive loses +5V, that would
be the reason.

Paul
