Probably because MS has removed support for pre-97 Office docs, which LO
still can read.

Just out of curiosity, I'd make it a priority to test the WiFi calling feature.
It's very easy. Just enable Airplane Mode, then enable WiFi and try to make a
call or send a text. You'll find out very quickly.

After the test, just disable Airplane Mode to get back to normal.

Nice rant, but no cigar, I'm afraid.

The WhatsApp number is a mobile phone number and hence you can call
them or/and 'text' (SMS) them, both of which methods are quite standard/
non-proprietary. Better luck next time.

Trust us (YTIU), WhatsApp works quite well on this side of the pond
and we don't need silly things like 'texting' or - worse - proprietary
*and* walled-garden iMessage.

That's a good reminder, Char; thanks! I tried it just
now, and in airplane mode with wifi enabled I could
still make a call, and the connection was clear.

Great! In the general direction of Consumer Cellular, I say, "Was that so hard?"

For a few years now, starting around 2020 and maybe or maybe not
connected with the pandemic, I've noticed that their customer service
people are courteous and mean well but are not otherwise very well
trained. It has not been unusual since then for me to contact two
reps and get wildly different answers to the same question. On Wifi
calling, it's been four reps with four wildly different answers,
which you wouldn't think would be possible. :-)

Anyway, that chapter of my life is over now. Thanks for your
encouragement!

After my test call, I actually forgot to go out of airplane mode. On
a longish call with a friend later in the morning, I got a bit of
echoing from time to time. I twigged to having forgotten airplane
mode when I happened to look at my call history and saw the wifi icon
appeared on today's calls.
