Used to be when you closed Notepad (by clicking x in upper right corner)
the file you were working on closed at the same time. Next time you
opened Notepad you started with a clean empty document.
Recently, that changed. Now when you open notepad it opens with the
previous document also opened again. You also get the situation where
all the documents previously opened are open in separate tabs along the
top border. I have no use for this new behavior, I really don't like it,
and it is very bothersome. It would be nice if they provided CLOSE and
CLOSE_ALL options in the menu.

QUESTION:Is there some way to dial back to previous version of Notepad?
TIA. Bill S.

Session state: a new "feature". Now a new term can be added to the
online search: "windows 11 notepad clear session state", which found:

if you right click a tab in notepad, they do offer CLOSE_TAB and
CLOSE_OTHER_TABS options.

An alternative, is to keep a Win11 and a W10 partition
on your disk drive. Whip over to Win10 and grab the
Notepad.exe out of there.

As far as I remember, Windows 11 won't let you set the old notepad to be
default for .txt or .pdf files. They have gone to extraordinary lengths to
stop the old one being used - why, for Heavens sake? The new one is an
unnecessarily complicated PITA.

Not really true.

I use Notepad, Old Notepad and Notepad++ in Win 11 depending on what I
am editing. Added shortcuts for all three to the SendTo menu so I can
choose. If you want Old Notepad to be the default for .txt (etc) in Win
11 just change the file association in Settings, same as older versions
of Windows.

Because Microsoft treat users as cattle, and users do not
mind, thanks to the enormous investments put into the
conditioning of the customer. If customers had the dignity
to refuse such treatment, companies would not be able to
sell such products.

Since Windows 98 SE, I have been using RPad32 as Notepad
replacement:

<http://gdisoft.narod.ru/free/office/rpad32/rpad26.rar>

The official site above provides an installer, which makes
no sense whatsoever, so that you may safely use unpacked
files:

<https://freeshell.de/antonius/file_host/RPad32.7z>

Some features:

-- Saving the file at switching to another window and
reloading it at switching back.

-- If you are opening a file that is already open in another
instance of RPad, it will activate the exising window.

-- Respect the read-only attribute, if required.

-- If you put an RPad label in under %WINDIR%\SendTo, you
will be able to open files with RPad via the Send To
context menu.

-- URLs are detected and parsed, if required.

Hello.

bilsch01 <usenet@writer.com> schrieb

>QUESTION:Is there some way to dial back to previous version of Notepad?

yes, the old notepad.exe is in the windows subfoler. Win11 just tries
to redirekt every call of the notepad.exe to the new Win11 Eidtor.
Switch it off in the "Alias" Section of the Apps.

Ich have only german Win11 so I try to translate the way to switch
back:
Win11 Menu/ Settings/Apps/<second menue> extended Settings for
Apps/Alias for Apps and there switch the Editor off.

Then you can create a link on the Desktop to C:\windows\notepad.exe
and start the old editor/notepad known from earlier Win-versions.

At the first start it has a small banner to tell you that there is a
new version, but you can klick the x on the banner and it will not
bother you again.

I use Autohotkey V1.x and it does not work with the new Editor from
Win11. it works fine with the old version. So I try to stay at the old
Version.

You can get the clean document behavior on open instead of continued
sessions.

Click the gear in the upper right hand corner. It is "settings."

For some reason, I presume nefarious, they have hidden the option under a
dropdown labeled "When Notepad Starts." Not at all clear or intuitive.

Choose the "Open a New Window" radio button and close it up. No more
persistent editing.

After no one selects the option, because it is well hidden, MS will claim
that usage data indicates that no one wants this feature and will attempt
to keep it all in the cloud like Sticky Notes. That's the "nefarious."

For now, however, you can set this back to normal.

Same goes for the tabs. It's easy to choose it in the dropdown box under
"Opening Files," again hidden under an arrow dropdown. Choose "Open in a
New Window."

Funny that these two options for getting normal behavior back present in
totally different ways and are obscured, eh?

HTH.

OK. I never before noticed the little gearwheel in the upper right of
