VAX Pascal v1 was a pain to use, but v2 was a completely different
compiler, with all kinds of neat extensions (including being able to pass
function/procedure arguments by keyword).

And Borland’s Turbo Pascal was a UCSD derivative, with its own interesting
extensions.

So the critics were likely right about (standard) Pascal being of limited
use, without some sort of extensions.

One could argue that standard Pascal was for having students learn
good programming habits and Wirth's suggestion for real software
development was Modula-2.
