Actually the first microprocessor was done in the
late 1960s, for military hardware (fighter jets IIRC)
but was classified until recently.

Once owned a Honeywell mainframe terminal, poll / select type, that
had a set of 40 pin packages by Fairchild, called the "Basic Logic
Unit". Perhaps a for runner of the F8 series, but never found
anymore info on the set at the time. Date code 1969, but the earliest
Intel efforts were not single chip designs, and this preceded such by
quite wide margin...
