XML-RPC is a very old standard (even older than SOAP). But the
XML format is simple to understand making it easy to implement
even without a XML-RPC library.

Plenty of examples. Servers: Java and Python. Clients: Java,
Groovy, Python, PHP, C, Pascal, Fortran and Basic.
