I don't know what sort of services they are.

comp.arch connection:

Yes, Eternal September seems to be filtering them effectively.

But hundreds more are visible in Google Groups today. I'm reporting
them, but I am starting to doubt that it will do much good ...

AFAICT whoever is doing it has created hundreds of accounts, each of
which has posted just a couple of messages to many different groups.

Even if all the messages ARE reported, it takes many reports to get an
account banned. If they use each account only once a week [or
whatever], or simply abandon them after posting and create new ones,
then we'll never be rid of the spam.

I spoke too soon. This morning, I did get two spam messages. :-( But
that is far better than it was.

Eternal September does a decent job for comp.arch where we have only 25
or so spam messages per hour. Their filter is significantly less
effective for comp.lang.c where spamming rate almost 10x higher than
here.
i2pn2.org is more efficient. So far it is near perfect.

Hopefully Thai spammers will eventually run out of motivation.
Mushroom spammer are another story. They are not going to give up
anytime soon.

What is the motivation or goal to spamming a newsgroup like this? It is annoying
but I find it hard to believe that is the goal. The only thing I can think of is it
places a quantity of Thai text in a file on the workstation / server. If you were to
search mail servers for Thai text there would be a lot to process then. Are they
trying to deter another organization from text searches on workstations or
servers, that is, is it just paranoia ? Could they be trying to hide some data so
that they can retrieve it on a number of machines? Someone trying to send an
S.O.S, hoping it will be possible to track back to the workstation?

Interesting. Wonder if the spam is backed by a specially trained AI that
might be able to pick up on the AAAA aspect?

I expect that it is an attempt at Search Engine optimization.

Spam is now ~ 30/hr visible in Google Groups. Fortunately Eternal
September seems to be filtering out almost all of it. I've only seen
a handful get through this week.

Groups, however, is becoming unworkable: Google makes it so difficult
to report spam that it takes a couple of hours just to get through the
overnights, and by the time I finish those, there are 50..100 more new
ones.

Is this group dead? Is there any reason to keep trying?

Unless we can find a way to stop the spam at its source-- this group is dead

What we need is a proactive way to kill the spammer(s)

There is no such way for us.
Even google itself can't do it proactively.
Of course, google can easily do it re-actively, but the don't care.

However it looks like among the frequent comp.arch posters majority
accesses it through Eternal September server that manages to filter
spam on comp.arch (unlike heavier spammed groups like comp.lang.c)
relatively well.
You and me were the only frequent posters that used Google Groups
exclusively. But I already adjusted. So by now you are the only one who
suffer badly from this spam.

Is your insistence on access through Google Groups a matter of principle?
At very least, you can *read* comp.arch through
https://www.novabbs.com/devel/thread.php?group=comp.arch
This web site shows the group as filtered by i2pn2.org server that filters
out current wave of spam almost perfectly.
Then when you want to answer you can do it via Google Groups.

If it is not a matter of principle then just register on one of the several
free Usenet servers that do decent filtering. For example one of the
two mentioned above.
news.eternal-september.org
news.i2pn2.org

When spam wave ends, you can go back to Google Groups, if you like it
better.

8-)

I live next to conservation land - coyotes have a den ~150ft from my
back door. Family of 5: 2 adults, 3 pups.

The squirrel population is down this season and the pups look a little
thin - I'd like to supplement their diet with spammer(s).

No, but it appears accessing it through Google Groups is. I echo
another poster, change to some other news server and you will be OK.
Though I think it does mean installing a news reader program instead of
using your browser.

Is there any reason to keep trying?

If you mean trying to use the newsgroup, and you enjoy the discussions
here, and I do, then definitely yes.

If you mean trying to get Google to do a better job, then I have no
knowledge.

It used to be that access to USENET was routinely provided by ISPs.

This changed some years back, due to hosting USENET coming with
increased legal risks. So now the only way to access usenet that doesn't
cost money is Google Groups that I'm aware of.

Then you need to learn more. Eternal September is free (though you have
to register and give them an e-mail address to send you the connect
information).

Others here have mentioned other providers that sound good, but with
which I have no personal experience.

I have been following this group for a couple of decades now. I
understand the natural ebb and flow of discussion ... and it may be
pure coincidence that legitimate traffic in this group dropped off

Google's motto (paraphrased) is: "Let's Do Evil"

Obviously Google is unable to take action against accounts they don't
provide/control. But, OTOH, they absolutely could filter the spam just
as other Usenet providers are doing. They simply choose not to.

---
From wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newsgroup_spam
"
The advent of the large Usenet archive kept as part of the Google
Groups website, has made Usenet more attractive to spammers than ever.
The goal in this case is not just to reach the members of a newsgroup,
but to also take advantage of the fact that Google gives a higher
pagerank to websites that are referred to by these messages, which are
catalogued and mirrored in multiple languages at Google's top-level
domain. Critics[who?] have suggested that Google has ulterior motives
for "turning a blind eye" to the problem since the websites being
pointed to use Google ads, which potentially generate revenue for both
the spammer AND Google. The spam is extremely unfair to the companies
paying Google and the spammer for an ad-click, as the most prevalent
current spam (2010) is trying to trick readers into clicking on web
ads by referring to them as images and saying that a link is hidden in
them "due to high sex content" or that a link hidden in the image
(Google ad) will take them to a "PayPal form" that will give them
money.[7][8]

While most newsreaders filter the spam at either the server or user
level, Google does not filter spam out of its Usenet News archive.
Google does, however, offer spam filtering for groups that decide to
abandon Usenet and form a moderated Google Group, which gives another
reason why Google would turn a blind eye to spam in its archive of
Usenet News.

Problem is that Google obviously allows bots to post
to Usenet, while restricting access to their other services...

Same here. Basically got a lifetime supply of text news for a few
bucks.

One fortunate thing about the spam is they consistently use non ascii
characters. So if you're in Gnus you can just do C-u / / [[:nonascii:]]
and the spam disappears.

Great idea! To filter on ascii. Petty that I miss people that use
google groups, beause of spammer.
