Pardon me asking a hardware question, but there are some knowledgeable
people here.

I have a laptop. I always use it with USB mouse and an external HDMI
monitor. The cables have to be long, but would be much shorter if I
could remove the fold-up monitor, which hinders passage under the
external monitor for the laptop flat body.

Has anybody removed one of these successfully?

Ed

Can't you just use it with the lid folded closed?

Obviously you'd set the action for
"when I close the lid" and "plugged in"
to "do nothing"

There would likely be a ribbon for the LVDS to the panel, and two Wifi antenna cables.
No idea what the hinges look like on that. The advert has no model number and
it's like they're selling tinned tomatoes. Acers normally have a plate adhered with
some kind of model details on the plate.

Or even slightly raise the monitor stand so the laptop goes under with
its lid. Seems stupid to ruin a perfectly good laptop and risk breaking
it completely.

It does have a Acer part number.
=> The model number can be found with the manufacturer's part no.,
NX.K86EK.006. which is shown in the advert's spec page.

Aspire 5 A515-47

Note: The closest model currently available on Acer's Aspire 5 web site
is Model: A515-47-R3Y6 Part: NX.K82AA.001. The main difference is the SSD
size at 512 GB vs. the adverts 1TB SSD.

There is a review here. They've removed the bottom plate.

https://laptopmedia.com/review/acer-aspire-5-a515-57/

"There are 10 Phillips-head screws you need to undo, to access this laptop’s internals.
After that, pry the panel with a plastic tool and lift it away from the chassis."

Surely there is more to it than that.

There must be some wiring between the bottom plate and and
monitor-plate. And it goes through the back hinges.
Is it continuous? Or does one of the plates have female connectors, one
male? If the latter is true, then I might feel inclined to try and drag
them apart.
This question calls for personal experience of having done it.

That would certainly allow it to be slid under the external monitor, but
it would preclude the keyboard.
Maybe a wireless keyboard might solve that. But I've always found a
time-drag with those things.
Still, it's coming close to a solution.

I pulled an older Dell inspiron 15 laptop apart to change the camera in
the lid.
There were of course the mounting screws for the hinges, the cable
bundle for the wi-fi (remember it's usually in the lid), the microphone
and the camera.
It wasn't hard, it was just time consuming, and getting the right part
off of ebay.

Thanks for that.
So then, the wiring doesn't go through the hinges. It's a direct line
past them and onto the mobo. You just disconnect the antenna cables and
the LCD cables from the mobo, and then remove the hinge screws.
I can't see any sign of wiring round the back of my laptop. They do a
good job of keeping it out of sight.

I have had some that would refuse to boot with the lid closed. This is
important when I'm upgrading it remotely.

Probably ok to believe that an Aspire 5 Model a515-57 disassembly and
internals are the same as an Aspire 5 Model a515-47.

The ten screws appear to be for the back cover. Probably 'a bit'<g> more
effort to remove the laptop screen. Some time ago I removed the back of
an Acer to replace the fan assembly - more than a two dozen screws(not
all philips type), a bunch of parts, 3 or 4 wire connections(one was to
the screen)...also noticed a small gray-ish contact(like a tiny button)
that was engaged when the screen was in the full closed position.

My present Lenovo gets pissed-off like that, it is USB-C powered taking
up to 100W (with the same port providing connection to dual monitors,
ethernet, keyboard, mouse, camera, mic, backup drive too).

The docking station claims it supplies 98W over USB, and the laptop
doesn't bat an eyelid over the 'missing' 2W when it's running, but when
it reboots the UEFI sets there with a warning that the power supply is
inadequate and needs <ESC> pressing, there's no setting to just ignore
power warnings like previous Dells have had, so it sits there getting
hot, spinning fans, not booting until there's manual intervention ...
stupid really.

That Youtube video is a gem. It's so well done; excellent step-by-step,
clear voice, great camera angle. I wish more YT videos were the same. So
many have indistinct sound, unclear English accent, and show signs of
having been thrown together without forethought.
Someone should start a website "Best YT Videos", and rate them for the
categories I mention above. Big job, but it could pay well to the producer.

We're using a Logitech wireless (wireless, *not* Bluetooth) keyboard
and mouse on my wife's laptop and both work perfectly fine. (And, as
another poster said, if you don't like a wireless keyboard, use a wired
one.)

The laptop sits in a drawer of a desk, with the monitor on a stand on
top of the desk, i.e. a 'desktop' configuration like you're aiming for.

But I wouldn't think about removing the display/hinge from the laptop.
No need, too much risk and you may encounter a scenario where the
external display doesn't work or doesn't work yet.
