That is also known as a "pop quiz".

That stunt was pulled a few times in schooling.

I presume this makes the staff feel better.

Except when it doesn't.

I think the head was crushed, when he
set a problem out of the blue, to be solved overnight. The students
did not cheat, because the nature of the problem, we were intended
to fail. We knew that. It was a problem easily solved with a computer and
finite element analysis. And all I had, was "me programmable calculator".
The next day, before handing in the quiz, I asked for the other students
to shout out the numeric final answer, and no two answers matched, and
they spanned two orders of magnitude (1..100 actually). Which isn't bad for
a problem where you are intended to fail. In engineering, that's "close".
So your bridge falls down. Build another. With twice as many girders.

The head made no further mention of the results of his quiz.
And he did not share a closed form solution with us either.
I think he was more than a bit annoyed at the results.
I guess he thought we all smoked a pipe and wore a tweed
jacket while working the problem.

Yes, there were elbow patches. It was authentic.

I don't know if you buy the pipe and it comes with
the tweed jacket, or you buy the tweed jacket and
it comes with the pipe. Maybe there's a kit on
Aliexpress that includes the patches. "Instant Professor Kit"

But because the man refused to return the assignments
to the students, refused to give a mark for the
assignment, and did not lecture and give the
closed form solution for the problem, I could
imagine him complaining in the employee lounge
with the other professors, about "the quality
of the students I get these days!". That they
cannot reproduce the equations for the Segway in
a single evening. If he saw the Segway equations,
I'm sure his pipe would catch on fire (a kind
of inverted pendulum problem).

Not about exams. I found that it I just did not worry
about them that I did much better. But I still have
bad dreams about forgetting when and where my classes
are and getting "F's" for no show. Weird, flipping
off cramming and worrying about exams got me "A's".
It was freeing.

Hmmmmm. "Old Fart". "Curmudgeon" sounds good too. Can't
decide which one I want to be. Your thoughts?

I'd bet that even young farts have dreams of looming exams. They're such
a regular occurrence amongst the top-of-the-food-chain species on this
planet; and the human brain is so vast, that the Indian yogis themselves
couldn't eliminate them from the recesses.

When your life nears its end, we're informed that the brain steps madly
through its entire past, trying to find some solution to what's about to
occur.
It seems rather tragic that it should drag up exams, bad bosses, failed
relationships. I'd rather have that "Come towards the light, Edward.
Step confidently forward".

I meant that tests or exams left a long impression on us, so that
decades later we are still having dreams.

Me, I can dream of not finding my pen on the morning, or the bus ticket,
or the calculator, or my clothes are not clean, and going to the shop in
pyjamas to buy a pen, and not having money because I am in pyjamas, and
thinking I am going to be late, and... all sort of ridiculous things
that happen on dreams.

Dunno, old fart seemed funnier.

What, no riding backward on a unicorn without your pants?

I am always losing my car in my sleep.

Hi Carlos,

I don't remember any of my tests.

Just out of curiosity, in Spain, do you call it
"college" or "University" as they do in England?

Wow, that's new.

Nope :-)

No unicorns in my dreams. I fly, though, at about one meter or two of
height, maybe three, and nobody thinks it strange.

No pants thing, a few times. I am embarrassed, but nobody notices. I
heard that one happens to many people.

>

Something weird happens to me when I drive. Like driving from the rear
seat for no reason. Or not being able to use the clutch, but still
changing one or two gears. Ah, of course, no pedals if I sit on the rear
seat.

I'm unsure if they are the same thing. In Ontario, where I went to
college, they have both things. In Spain, it was university at my time,
but with different names for the resulting degrees.

This is a generalisation for England & Wales:

University - where you study for a degree or post-degree academic
qualification. Often residential, with accommodation in university
buildings, or "digs" in nearby private houses, or shared rental with
other students. Living away from one's parents is seen as a vital part
of this.

College - more or less any other institution for students over the age
of 16, where you study for a variety of different qualifications, some
of which are seen as non-academic: hairdressing, woodworking, playing a
musical instrument, etc. Courses may be part-time (sometimes evenings)
or full-time, or "block release" (6 months at college then 6 months
working for an employer - possibly combined with an apprenticeship).
Usually non-residential: students live at home with parents or in other
accommodation that they have found for themselves. The word "college"
can also describe a component institution with a university.

The word "student" usually describes one who attends a university or
college.

A note about schools: in most areas of the UK: infant is for age 5-7
years, junior 7-11, (so are lumped together as primary), then secondary
is for 11-18. Pupils may leave school at 16 so some schools only
provide for pupils up to age 16; a smaller number of schools provide for
pupils up to age 18. There are some "sixth-form colleges" for 16-18
year olds. Historically schools were divided into "year-groups"
covering 2 or 3 calendar years (so lower-fourth, upper fourth, lower
fifth, middle fifth, upper fifth covered the 5 years for pupils aged
11-16). Today school years are numbered from 1 to 13, which I think is
similar to the convention in the USA.

The word "pupil" usually describes one who attends a school.

There are always exceptions: for a while we had "middle schools" for
ages 13-16. And there are non-state schools which use different names.

Also: state schools are funded by the state, "private" schools are
generally funded by the parents of pupils, and "public" schools (e.g.
Eton) are also funded by the parents of pupils. In both cases there may
be funding from other donations or investments. So private and public
are generally similar but involve different levels of snobbery.

For students over age 16 or 18 to 21 or beyond students generally fund
themselves. In the past this might have included a means-tested grant
from the state, but now it may be a form of loan from the state. So
most students work at least part-time to fund themselves.

Hope this helps ....

Digs are no longer a thing. Students have much higher expectations these
days and almost exclusively stay in specific student accommodation.

Confusingly it also describes separate universities i.e. University
College London, King's College, Imperial College.

Oxford/Cambridge are the same, but are usually recognised as single
institutions where in reality you attend a specific college i.e.
Christchurch, King's (not the same as the one above), Churchill, Trinity.

In Scotland, which has a different educational system, there is primary
school from age 4 or 5 with years P1-7 then secondary school S1-6. Often
these schools are called Academies or High School. All schools teach to S6
but pupils can leave at any time once they're 16 which is typically S5. In
England you have three types of qualifications GCSE, As-level & A-level. In
Scotland there are four: National 4, National 5, Higher and Advanced
Higher.

There's also grammar schools in some parts of England which you have to
pass the 11+ exam to gain entry to.

That is pretty much what my understanding was. You were
much more eloquent. Uni is what we call college; trade
school is what you call college.

I was interested if Spain followed you naming
convention or ours.

There is also a translation issue. What word does "college" translate
for? "Colegio" is for kids. But a technological university has many
"escuelas de ingenieria", or engineering schools. Then the engineering
association is a "colegio" too.

It is not that simple, and I am not up to date on the current system of
names and grades, anyway.
