Yeah. There is a cda loader for Prodos 8 that loads a bunch of cda's without have to boot GSOS. Also have to weed out the cdas that won't work with Prodos 8. Pretty much any cda that has to save or load files will need GSOS booted, but there are a couple that use Prodos 8 to read and write files. One such is a SHR screen saver. The rest I have in my folder are just calculators, calendars and help files.

P8CDA - https://whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/p8cda.html - GS only.

There's not really going to be the equivalent of this for 8-bit systems, as each application completely takes over the system. You could imagine an ecosystem of applications that followed a cooperative protocol - e.g. reserving some memory and allowing the Reset handler to return to a supervisor program - but other than things like GEOS this didn't happen.

You might want to check out Apple II Desktop that someone is working on for the 8-bit machines. Lots of desk accessories in a 8-bit GUI. It was just uploaded to the Apple II Enthusiasts file storage on Facebook. Don't know where else it has been uploaded.

Heh. Yeah, github.com/a2stuff/a2d and a2desktop.com for full documentation. The work in 1985/86 by the wizards at Version Soft and Apple (for the MouseGraphics ToolKit) was amazing, but we've taken it a bit farther.

I love it too. Given MouseDesk was my first experience of the 'Finder'
on our early IIGS, I love to see it so developed with super useful
features now.

But why do you still have a to select an icon and then then go to File

I bet you're running with an accelerator. The default double-click timeout goes by too quickly so the double-click is not seen. Go into the Control Panel and up the delay. (Or maybe you're at 1MHz and clicking too fast. In which case, slow down.)

I tweaked the default for v1.3 but with an emulator sometimes it still needs the Control Panel setting adjusted.
