Hi, Boris.
A bit late in responding, thanks for the feedback.

Just an fyi...
On Windows 11, if having a desire/need/love of Windows Media Player(not
the Win11 Media Player app version), the legacy version is still
available via Windows features(if not already present)
- Windows Features can be accessed through the legacy Control Panel
option for Progams and Features or via Win11 Settings options.

That should be "Paul and others". If memory serves, I
was one of those others.

That was Boris' comment.
My post might have caused confusion on the source.
I included part of Boris' earlier response since my reply applied to 2
of his messages...rather than reply to each individually.

Hi,

I do have WMP Legacy on this Windows 11 machine, it's just not been
'installed'. I didn't want to install someting I may not use, but now
that I've tried Windows 11 Media Player, I'm may install WMP Legacy, so I
don't have to launch another macine's OS to get to the Legacy version.

I have not made any configuration changes to this OEM (Dell) install of
Windows 11 Home (22H2) since received in September, 2022. But, although
WMO Legacy is not found under Settings>Apps>Installed apps, it is found
under Settings>Apps>Default apps.

If I right click an audio file is File Explorer, the Open with includes
Windows Media Player Legacy. If I then select WMP Legacy, I have to
install and configure. I haven't yet.

This must be because the Turn Windows Features On or Off (Control Panel),
shows that Windows Media Player is 'On'. Go figure.

Thanks for the reply.

I forgot to add, using Windows 11 Search, and entering Windows Media
Player Legacy, will this launch the installer for WMP Legacy.

? Not sure whether you looke for it in Windows Features or just
referenced it as 'On'

If Programs and Features/Windows Features shows that WMP Legacy(WMP-L)
item has a check mark, then it's already installed(the feature is enabled)
- Opening WMP-L will prompt to configure(like WMP-L always has done on
first use).

I've ripped music files from store bought CDs, using Windows 11 Media
Player (not legacy WMP).

When I insert a blank to CD to burn to, the ripped files are nowhere to be
found. Where are they?

Ripping to CD, implies burning the music or media content in Media
Player or another CD drive to a blank write-able CD.
Are you claiming the content once ripped is not on the CD?

Heve you consider using File Explorer to look for w11 Media Player
library cache(i.e. Music)

Enter
shell:My Music
-into the address bar of File Explorer

C:\Users\username\Music\AlbumName\DescriptString\07 songname.m4a

Now, is that extension suitable for burning ?

07 I Robot.m4a: ISO Media, MP4 v2 [ISO 14496-14]

*******

"Audio CDs always contain uncompressed PCM stereo audio
at 44100 Hz sample rate, 16-bit sample format. So to
burn an audio CD, export the file(s) you want to burn
as a 44100 Hz 16-bit stereo WAV or AIFF file.
"

But I think you can burn other formats (as a Data CD),
and depending on the sophistication of the device, it'll play them.

It's when older equipment is involved, or a player product
introduced early in the CD cycle, that there could be a
problem.

"Windows Media Player on Windows 11/10 offers the DVD burning feature.
It can burn audio CDs, data CDs as well as data DVDs. A data DVD has
about 4.7 GB capacity and can store music, pictures, and videos. It
can be played on PCs and some DVD players that support the file types
you import to the DVD disc."

The instructions are probably for the legacy version.

"In the Player Library, select the Burn tab, select the
Burn options button Options button, and then select
Audio CD or Data CD or DVD.

Insert a blank disc into your CD or DVD burner."

I looked in Media Player.App and I can't find a burn tab.

*******

OK, so if I burn a .m4a track as an "Audio CD", I
get back "Track01.cda" 44 bytes on the CD disc.

Which causes VLC media player to choke. That's
probably why when I inserted the media after the burn,
the machine did... nothing. Because it did not recognize
the thing just burnt. Cooleo.

(It turns out, you have to "tell" VLC that the disk is an
audio CD, that burned disc, and then it works.)

If I use the Settings tiddler in WMPL, just vertically below the "X"
in the upper right hand corner, I can select Data CD. It
threatens to burn 94MB, which is the sum total of .m4a files.

when I do that, then re-insert the (apparently bogus) Audio CD
I just burned, now it starts playing it !! The properties in
file Explorer now claims it is CDFS file system. I did not
get a chance to press the "Start burn".

The Track01.cda says it is "WMP11.AssocFile.CDA (.cda)".
So it's an AssocFile. Whatever that is.

*******

So really, the only thing "Media Player.App" has going for it,
is it uses GraceNote to get album metadata. Whereas
Windows Media Player Legacy continues to use some older
(broken) Xbox link for media recognition, which fails to work.
But Windows Media Player Legacy, knows how to burn. And it's
IMAPI2 at work, because it still does not know how to erase
a disc. I erased my CDRW in Imgburn, then flipped over to
WMPL and did the Start Burn there.

If you know the title of one of the songs you could search for it in your home folder.
I doubt Media Player would put it in a system folder, most likely your home folder.

It's possible the destination is a Library, and
by accident you have made the "Default folder"
something obscure, and that's why the files
went somewhere other than the expected location.

[Picture]

The green tick should be moved to the default write location.

The read locations (gathering of folders) are all congealed into one bucket.

Not that I use libraries. No libraries are currently configured here.
That's why the tick is next to the folder of the same name.

Hi, Paul
That's why I suggested using File Explorer address bar and entering
shell:My Music

Windows 11(and even 10)is and has always been way too wonky on default
location setup by Windows. Windows retains the oobe location until the
user makes the necessary changes.

The default location remains in the userprofile My Music folder even if
WMP settings is configured for ripping music to a library in a different
location(same drive, other drive, other partition). That 'different'
location when configured is also the location of all music(assuming it
was copied from the userprofile My Music folder or somewhere
esle(backup, media, etc.) or even configured before ripping any music to
the 'different' prefered location.
- i.e. configuring the rip location and music files location in WMP
doesn't override the default Win11/10 location setup by Windows.
=> the only way to change the default My Music location in a
userprofile is to access the My Music folder in the userprofile, select
Location, and use the 'Move' option.

We just got a new Win 11 laptop and I stupidly let it add one drive during startup config. Even when I did an uninstall
of one drive, those shell:xxx locations in the registry were still there pointing to onedrive\pictures &docs. Threw me
a fastone when I found there were two places for shell:folders in the registry.
I won't do that again. I had duplicate Downloads and Documents and Pictures... And word wanted to save to them too.
Do you get the feeling I don't like onedrive?!

If you haven't changed the defaults, the files will most likely be in
your Music library. Press Windows+E to open Explorer, then double-
click on Music.

Or see if the WMP menus have a "Recent Files" item -- "Open in
Folder" would be even better, but just knowing the filename you can
do a Windows search to find the file and folder.

If you can't turn them via the above, search carefully through all
the WMP settings and one of them should be the location of the ripped
files. Or, insert another disc and start the clicks for ripping, up
to but not including the start button (which may be called something
else[1]). Somewhere along the way there should be an option for where
to put the ripped files.

[1] Sorry I can't be more specific, but I use iTunes and have never
tried WMP. These things usually work in similar ways, though, so what
I write above should be helpful.

I don't think so. The OP said "ripped _from_ CD", which is the normal
thing. Ripping _to_ CD makes no sense unless you have a PC with two
optical drives, which would be extremely rare.

In my experience ripping usually means transferring the files to your
hard drive, possibly with some transformation. For example, iTunes
rips to AAC format (*.m4a filenames) by default, though it can do
other formats. If you rip to a .wav file, you have a completely
lossless copy, but it's ten times the size of an AAC file. (Though
the conversion to AAC is technically lossy, with the default quality
setting of 128 kbps my ears can't tell the difference.)

And iTunes itself can burn a playlist of AAC files to a Music CD that
will play in any standard player.

My confusion with trying to burn a CD using the Media Player app is that
the Windows 11 Media Player app does not do burning, only ripping, to be
burned by another program, or File Explorer. I assumed that Media
Player did burn. My mistake. It doesn't, and as you say, there is no
burn tab.

Before I realized the above (no burning capability within Media Player),
I didn't know why after ripping a (store bought) CD using Media Player,
that the ripped files didn't show up in Media Player, along with a burn
tab that I could use to burn the ripped files to CD, all within Media
Player. I thought I could rip and burn all within Medial Player, just
like I could with Windows Media Player Legacy.

So I'd rip a CD in Media Player, and then go looking for a burn tab.
Since I couldn't find a burn tab, I assumed that the CD got ripped,
becuase the app said 'rip completed', but I just coudn't fine wherd the
ripped files resided, ready to burn.

Winston, per your suggestion (using Everything), I searched for
specicific file names that were ripped, and found them in
C:\users\username\Music\Artist\AlbumName\track# trackname.mp3 (or m4a),
similar to where Paul said I would find the files.

Yes, I burn as Data CD.

Yep. I found that link, and it does indeed describe the Legacy version.
I've not found any instruction for the Windows 11 Media Player, and I've
spent a lot of time looking before asking questions on this ng.

Yep. There's Your Trouble.

I have noticed exactly just that. Yep, Cooleo.

Yes.

Yes.

Yes, Media Player is better at album metadate.

Yes.

I have found that Media Player is little glitchy when ripping. I can
rip a file(s), and when the ripping is finished, I'll sometimes get a
pop-up in the lower right saying "the rip operation did not complete",
yet next to the song file itself, the message is "100% rip completed",
and I can find the ripped file in
C:\users\username\Music\Artist\AlbumName\track# trackname.mp3 (or m4a).
Very glitchy.

The setup here is a Win11 macine with no optical drive, with a USB LG
model SP80NB80 Slim Portable DVD writer.

I don't rip/burn CDs often, but when I need to do so, I think I'll
revert back to my Win7 with Windows Media Player 12 (or
ImgBurn/FileExplorer, or even Roxio, for burning).

Thanks.

OneDrive is one of those features that has its plus and minuses.
If one doesn't know in advance how it works and where to configure, it
can be a challenge to right the ship.
I find it useful for use with multiple devices(even my iPhone), but I
do limit/constrain its syncability turning off Backup(Documents,
Pictures, Desktop for all MSFT account(MSA) Windows logons) and relocate
the base OneDrive folder to another SSD(via the Unlink Pc and then
re-Link to that new location). Even with 1TB of storage(from M365
Office) I don't need(or want) the default location on the o/s in any MSA
logon profile - that other SSD files are backed up automatically and
independent from the imaging of the main disk(drive) partitions(System,
MSR(Reserved), O/S(Primary), Recovery(Win RE).

Dunno, but FYI

Ripping implies a change of file type otherwise you would be copying.

Most ripping is to change CDA files to either MP3 or another audio file
type.

To find your files go through the ripping process again, carefully
reading each window. Somewhere there will be a file save location that
will show you where your ripped files went then you can change it for
future use if you need to.
You don't need to complete the ripping operation as you are just using
it to find your ripped files.
