I can post to test.posts without authentication, so disable auth.

An NNTP client can authenticate to a news server, it is not mandatory
to do so. Some news servers allow reading without access, but restrict
posting to authenticated users or to some local groups only to
avoid/reduce abuse.

You need to configure your client, so it doesn't try to authenticate.

Are you suggesting that, from where you appear to be posting - Germany -
that you are not being asked to 'authenticate' before reading/posting in
one or more groups at 'news.myplugbox.com'?

I just tried this with PhoNews for Android and it worked, I could read
some postings. When setting up the application I was given the choice of
authenticating or not authenticating. I'm not sure if every nntp reader
does give you this choice.

There is no need to be astounded because people are less bothered to
look for servers when there are many around. However, I have posted a
request for you on "news://news.myplugbox.com/server.news" and hopefully
somebody will reply. That newsgroup is very quiet. The last post was on
2nd September 2021. I have posted one now but it may not be read by
anybody. I see "Sir Rick" passed away sometime ago according to that
newsgroup.

I didn't need an account to post on that newsgroup but the choice is
limited because the newsgroups are all created by DaveH or whoever is
managing it.

German ISP KurpfalzTEL, IPv4 because the server only supports that

You can give up, if you'd like. David has been banned from that server and he
knows very well why. In the years since then, he periodically tries to enlist
others to help him regain access, but that's not going to happen. He's not

Why don't *YOU* explain to Jack that the reason I was banned from using
that server was because I pointed out to the naive users of the server
that there is *NO* 'protection' provided to any of the newsgroup users.

EVERYTHING posted on the Plugbox server can be reviewed by the server
owner who can also, of course, use Kali or similar to determine any
weaknesses in their on-line security. My concern was/is that such
vulnerable folk, and their computers, might be co-opted into a Botnet
and that they'd be none-the-wiser.
