Windows Home, fully updated (this is my laptop) now has 1" square
graphic at the top when caps lock, scroll lock, or num lock goes on and
off. This replaces the little text on the systray. Okay.

But today there was a graphic with a hand and a finger pointing to the
bottom left. I can't reproduce it. What is this, or what are these t
hings called so I can google for an answer?

It is called a porn image. Search for free porn sites and you'll get
many hits.

Good luck

Sounds like something weird the manufacturer has installed to make up
fir the fact that there are no LEDs on the keyboard for Caps Lock or Num
Lock.

Was the weird new one for Scroll Lock?

This is a 5 or 10 year old refurbished HP, an Elite Desk. For which I
got a new SDD and installed the OS from scratch.

>fir the fact that there are no LEDs on the keyboard for Caps Lock or Num
>Lock.

There are those lights on the keyboard, but I did like it when a couple
small words showed up in the systray when I turned one of the 3 locks on
or off. That started several months or a year ago.

Doesn't everyone with win10 Home have that?

This is the upgraded version, no more text in systray but 1" square
graphic in middle of screen horizontally, at the top.

>Was the weird new one for Scroll Lock?

No. Scroll lock shows a white padlock on a grey background with a grey
downpointing arrow in the lock. Caps lock is the same but it shows a
capital A. Numlock is the same but it shows a number 1. The shackle
of the lock is open or closed to match the status.

You mean none of you have either the text of the graphics?

Maybe it's only Home, because they figure Home users need all the help
they can get. I don't know if it does this on Pro because, as I point
out in another thread, I haven't updated my Pro computer for 2 years.

HP Hotkey Support.

See if there is a copy installed.

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Video-Display-and-Touch/Turn-Off-Caps-On-Lock-On-Screen-Notification/td-p/6470519

Apparently the registry keys are missing, and it might have something
to do with an "improvement" HP made. A poster in that thread, recommends
going back to a previous version (different behavior).

Hey that's it!!

I'd heard of Accesibility, but never Ease of Access. I guess that's an
HP name.

The HP guy writes:
"You’ve done an excellent job on diagnosing the issue from your end.
Kudos to you on that score. It is always a privilege to work with
tech-savvy and technically competent customers like you. We greatly
value your relationship with HP. You are a valued HP customer and we
appreciate you greatly for doing business with HP. I take it as a
privilege to share this platform with you."
Wow, he really butters him up.

My new urologist treated me like this, saying how smart I was,
expressing surprise at how old I am, and that he woke up in the middle
of the night more times than I do. It's too much. I feel like I"m a
girl and he's trying to get me in bed. And he also has bad traits. For
one, no email address and no portal. Who lives like that? The
secretary reluctantly gave me her email address and when I wrote once,
only answered one of the two questions. I don't know whether to look
for another or not.

>Apparently the registry keys are missing, and it might have something
>to do with an "improvement" HP made.

If I put in a new SSD, maybe I did download HP drivers. NO NO. The
other computer is HP. This is an Acer laptop!!

I pressed the Windows key and typed in easeofa, and easeofaccess.exe
popped up, the only item in the listm, but clicking on it several times
seems to do nothing.

I've googled easeofaccess.exe and there is a lot to read. One may tell
me what each graphic means.

And Everything shows several files with easeofaccesss in the name.

Thanks for pointing the way.

i don't dislike it. I like it pointing out when I mistype and turn caps
on. They only stay on for a little while, so little I couldn't decide
what theat forth graphic was for. And it hasn't been back. C'est la
vie.

FWIW, I found many copies of easeofaccessdialog.exe, and none would run
because I have a 64 bit laptop and I guess they are 32 bit. I'll keep
trying but I don't hink I have any 32 bit versions.

So something turned the whole thing on, but not me.

OK, try this.

Right-click Start : Run : control.exe

That starts Control Panels in Windows 10.

Now, right click the new blue folder icon in the TaskBar.
This will offer to "Pin Control Panels to Taskbar".

Since you're in the Control Panels, now is an excellent time
to set the view to "Small Icons".

There is an "Ease of Access" control panel.

*******

The Settings wheel, has "Accessibility".

There's a whole bunch of stuff in there, none of
it all that helpful.

Those are the two places I would look. I'm on W11 right now,
but I had the W10 on the other machine open earlier, and
it did not look much better, in our search for a "Padlock icon control"
and "finger icon control". If there was such a control, it
was likely removed from some previous version.

That's why I assumed you were on an HP laptop and
there was an HP program controlling the icons.

*******

Note that, not every "blah.exe" executes!!!

Remember, there are two kinds of programs.

win32 - You know all about these. You're an expert with these.
Metro - The EXE files on these, today, have ZERO SIZE.
Check the byte count. An earlier version of EXE files
for Metro Apps, the EXE was actually a PE file, with
real live executable code. It would cause the screen to
blink... and, nothing would happen. Well, the last time I
looked, they have streamlined this further, and some of the
Metro EXE are now ZERO BYTES. Which of course, cannot work
to accept any sort of double click.

If you go to File Explorer, and enter

shell:appsfolder

try double-clicking an item there, and
it will probably work.

There is no easeofaccess in there. Have a look.

Ease of Access has been a feature included with Windows for some time.

For Windows 10
- Settings/Ease of Access
12 different settings across three areas(Vision, Hearing, Interaction)

Something like that showed up in the search box and it has to do with
Microsoft news. I am doing a fresh install so I have not gotten around to
figuring out if it can be gotten rid of.

By golly, there is.

True. And the one thing we've been discussing, I couldn't find in the
time I was willing to spend. (I went through all 8 categories of them
once.)

But since then the mystery graphic showed up one more time and the
pointing finger pointed to a little circle or maybe a square with a red
X in it. Apparently I had pressed keys that didn't do anything. Usually
it beeps about that and maybe it also beeped. I had tried other mistakes
and couldn't get the graphic, but I'm satisfied.

Oh, okay. No, it's an Acer. But it still disclosed these aids which
may well help when i'm older and decrepit.
