Can somone get a whatsapp account if the phone has no sim?

My friend has some long distance but US numbers that her landline will
not call for some reason. She has to call the operator who charges her
$1.50 to place the call, even though she tried to do it herself.

She's 80 years old and use the cellphone very little, uses her nextdoor
neighbor's wifi with his permission, so she has no sim. But it would
be nice if she could use whatsapp on occasions like this.

She could use Skype but that requires an advance payment of $10, but $10
is a lot to her and she might never use (I'll bet they keep the unused
part from millions of people who have died. Do YOU have it in your will
who you are leaving your unused Skype money to?)

I'm sorry, but no, and this is intentional. The whatsap account is tied
to a real phone number. I'm unsure if it can be associated to a land
line, but I think not.

Once the account is created, the SIM can be removed and it will continue
working on that phone for an undetermined time.

Some other messaging apps don't have this requirement, can use an alias.

It doesn't come up that often, and it's only $1.50. OTOH, I thought if
she took hwer phone with her when she went to a neighbor's , or a
doctor's office where some have free wifi, she could even use it to make
phone call.s OT3H, I have a cell phone with a phone number and whatsapp
and I have friends abroad, but I still wait until I'm home to make
calls.

Does that include phone calls, talking? I suspect not. She won't text
anyone. I only do it** because some people I know demand it, and she
doesn't even have that incentive.

I've recently figured a 2-step process for texting people from my PC
emai program. I'm sure you know all this but for others, I posted
details earlier. (Got no replies, however.)

You only need a phone number which can receive a phone call.
It doesn't have to be a cell phone. If the phone can't
receive a SMS, the code ist spoken und you have to
enter the code manually in the cell phone or tablet
with Whatsapp installed.

This indeed *used* too be true (I've used it before, for our SIM-less
tablet, so my wife could use WhatsApp).

But *now*, WhatsApp says you need SMS. So Micky needs to *test* what
is true, the old way or what WhatsApp says now.

Telegram does have phone calls, I just looked. I see it has my username
and phone number. I suspect the phone number is not a hard requirement,
that I created the account initially without a phone number, then added
it because it is useful. I seem to recall that I created the account on
a computer.

Whether it accepts to do phone calls with only an user id, no number, I
do not know. Possibly.

Signal also has phone calls, but works with a phone number only, I think.

Mind: it is phone calls inside the application. Some of the tools do
video calls (by default?).

You can also use "Google Chat". No calls. But Google Meet has video
calls. I don't know if it can do just voice calls.

I will look into Telephone and Signal. Maybe even Google Meet. That
one came pre-installed on the phone.

But 99% of the carriers only have one.

Even though I use Mint Mobile, the email address is tmobile.com.
OTOH a friend who uses Cricket has an email address with cricket in the
name.

No more lifting that heavy phone to make a text when you are already at
your keyboard.
