Psychologists love things like that. Suburban paranoia (some stupid kid
smashes a window; the house-owner thinks it's the guy who lives
opposite, and starts a war); everybody gets dragged in (like in that
movie "The Burbs" with Tom Hanks) until some innocent victim is found.
Reason gets turned back to front. Instead of "prove it's true" you hear
"prove it's not true"; guilty before innocent.
