Hi All,

W10
W11

This will get you your trash bin back in the left
column of Windows Explorer:

--> <win><R> Regedit.exe
--> By hand or make a *.reg out of the following:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}]

"System.IsPinnedToNameSpaceTree"=dword:00000001

--> Reboot

-T

It happened to me, too once, but I don’t remember how I fixed it, but I
don’t think I had to screw with the Registry for it.

Long, long ago in a land far, far from here (XPsp3) you could do it here :

Control Panel - Display - Desktop tab - Customize Desktop

Its quit possible that Win10 has got something similar, even if its dialog
has moved somewhere else.

Ah, yes. I can find that dialog thru here :

Right-click the desktop - properties - Desktop tab - Customize Desktop

Regards,
Rudy Wieser

O

OR
Select Start, Settings > Personalization > Themes.

Under Themes > Related Settings: select Desktop icon settings. About
half way down the page

That is one thing I find amusing about this group, The first response
to any problem is to change an item in the Windows Registry.

Usually it can be done from Windows Setting.

If you can find what you want a google search will find the answers.
This takes less time and is less risky for the average user that make
changes in the registry.

Oh you don't. This is just the easiest way I have found,
especially since I have to work on several different
Windows OS's and builds as well. Plus, I know my way
around the registry.

The reg option in this case is like using a pipe wrench to turn on the
faucet.

Both Win10 and Win11 provide the ability to reset or toggle on the
Recycle Bin icon. Even when it is missing and shows as being toggled on,
turning it off, then back on resolves the issue.

Registry tweaks have their usefulness, but more often than not, an
understanding and knowledge of Windows settings provides an easier and a
more practical approach.

Lol. Although I'm the OP's attorney, the OP can claim his approach is
the easiest. You double-click a .reg file and the task is done. No
need to surf around various windows.

Did I miss something? The original post was about putting
a Recycle icon in the Explorer window treeview. Everyone
else seems to be talking about the Desktop. Why would
anyone want a Recycle icon in Explorer windows?

I went to great lengths to find the tweaks to clean the
superfluous items out of that treeview. (Like "Videos",
"Documents" and "3D Objects".... I still don't even know
what a 3D Object is. It sounds too silly to look up. :)

True, but if you have to explain it to someone (less computer literate) over the phone, please don't
put them through the hell of regedit. You could however email them the .reg file, that wouldn't
be too hard to walk them through the needed clicks.

The OP ('T') was talking about the Recycle Bin in *"Windows Explorer"*
(should be File Explorer, but let's not nitpick), not on the Desktop.
(You snipped 'T's text from Emeritus' response, but the essence was and
is in the 'Subject:'.)

3D Builder, is in the Microsoft Store. It can pull models from
a Microsoft server. The file extension is 3mf, which could be
Makerfile, something a filament based 3D printer might print
in plastic. Check your Start Menu and see if it is already there.

\Users\username\3D Objects\3D Builder\shape_cube_221031_031314.3mf

*******

Paint 3D is an art program, but it is a bit shy.
Using Process Monitor (procmon), it wrote something here when I started a Project.

3/10/2024 12:04:10.8085082 PM
PaintStudio.View.exe
CreateFile
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MSPaint_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\Projects
Projects.json <===

Otherwise, a search of the file system, could not find my named art project,
so I had to search for it the hard way (watch it do a CreateFile).

Right-click and Merge a .reg file.

As long as a .reg file (text) has the correct
format, then the computer can consume it. When you
Merge a .reg file, it can add or subtract Registry entries.
Both adding and subtracting are dangerous, and
you only accept files from people you trust,
who also happen to be clever enough to pull off
the fabrication of such files.

Polite inventors, make do.reg and undo.reg files,
for activities that are optional. This allows people
who are not knowledgeable about the Registry, to add a
thing, test it, then remove it again. And if the
files are well made, there are no side effects.
You merge the do.reg , test something, then merge the undo.reg.
And if the files are good at what they do, your
system is not harmed.

Places like tenforums.com offer things like that.

When you first start playing with sticks of dynamite
like that, it helps to open the file in Notepad and
examine what the "do.reg" and the "undo.reg" propose to do.

Generally speaking, the longer the file is, the
more danger that a bug could be present in it. I've
rejected files before, just based on length. But that's
also based on "where could the person have copied this
from". If it doesn't look like an OS stanza, it could
be a piece of twaddle.

The registry has ownership. Attempting to merge a .reg
file which modifies something owned by TrustedInstaller,
that's not trivial to do. And it's even possible that
the recipe for that which used to work, no longer works.
In some cases, a thing owned by TrustedInstaller, a
malware did that, and it wasn't an ordinary OS operation
that you're dealing with. So while most of the time,
a distributed .reg file, you have the authority to Merge it,
in some cases you'll be out of your depth and an error
message will indicate that something is up with the
ownership.

Because normally (at least under XPsp3) if something is put on the desktop
it also appears in that tree (which root is the desktop). Just as if the
desktop is a normal folder. :-)

But you've got a point : although I have disabled "My Computer", "My
Documents" and "My Network Places" thru that dialog (which doesn't have an
entry for the trash bin by the way) they still appear in the tree.
Currently I've got no idea (if I had one I forgot) how to remove those
name-space folders from the tree itself.

YMMV for Win10/11

> Why would anyone want a Recycle icon in Explorer windows?

So that, if that anyone does the registry-edit to suppress the trash bin
from the desktop window, he can still access his deleted files ?

Rudy Wieser

In my response I assumed he was talking about a missing Icon on the Desk
top.

When you look at C: drive in File Explorer the folder $Recycle.Bin
contains the Recycle bin "Recycle Bin".

To my knowledge there is no way to remove it, unless your folder
settings is set to hid System filers.

Is that time zone discrimination? We'll file a formal complaint against

Because when I am working on a customer's machine, I find
most of them have removed or never install the recycle
bin on their desktop. And I typically always have Windows
Explorer (WE) open, so the recycle bin is easier on me
if it also appears in WE's left column. It is a time
and aggravation saver.

Sometimes I have installed the icon on the desktop, but I
have had the experience of a few customers finding it and
accusing me of installing a virus. It is stupid, but ...

Had a weird on yesterday. The recycle bin's icon was in
WE's left column, but its name was 10 random characters.

Strange. And the file format needs its own Explorer
icon? I once had the free version of Sketchup, which an
architect friend raved about, but I never actually got
around to trying it. And I can certainly do without the
Microsoft Store. But thanks for the explanation. I was
guessing that it was some new kind of folder.
