Anyone using the free edition of Bitwarden?

Interested in using for a broad range of devices
(Mac/iOS/iPad/Windows/Android).

A question: is the 'cloud' vault location user "provided" as an option?

For example if I would prefer it be on Dropbox or iCloud - can that be
done? (as 1Password used to be before it went subscription-stupid).

I use Bitwarden on my Windows 11 laptop and on my iPhone. It works
pretty well in my experience. I'm not aware of where Bitwarden stores
my data, but it just works across platforms.

You need to use a Bitwarden server (it's not file-based, it's an API-based
protocol), but there are a couple of self-hosted versions:

https://github.com/bitwarden/server
https://github.com/dani-garcia/vaultwarden

File based vault was an assumption on my side. A 'nice' thing about
1Password was I could export a plain text version of the password vault,
re-use on my side with a leaned out data set (just the basics) and new
encryption scheme. This has limits (a lot!).

Well, that is a very tempting rabbit hole indeed ... other than I don't
want to run into issues if I'm traveling and can't reach my server if
something goes boink.

IAC, if the bitwarden server does its thing reliably I'd rather stay on
the main trunk.

.... and deeper!

Thanks.

I use it across every device, laptop, android phone, android tablet, Windows, Linux. Firefox,
Chrome, Edge. Works pretty good. I say that only in that a few sites don't play nice, but you can
always click the icon in the toolbar, click either the name or password icon and it copies to the
clipboard, a few clicks but at least you get into the site.

On Linux and I would suppose Windows, there is a desktop program. A lot larger and easier to run
around. I don't use it now, but did when I was setting things up.

The Firefox add-on will export to csv or, json in English or encrypted. My wife uses it to with a
different master password of course, but all I have to do is login with her id and I can see what
she has for a site that maybe I don't.

I set the timeout on my phone to 30 minutes or so, and then it locks. That way I can hit a lot of
sites and not have the vault lock all the time on me.

I saw your answers for BitWarden where another suggestion is KeepassXC
(the XC stands for cross compatible with macOS, Windows & Linux).
https://keepassxc.org/

Their documentation discusses most of the questions you might have.
https://keepassxc.org/docs/

For example, Cloud synchronization with Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive,
ownCloud, Nextcloud etc. https://keepassxc.org/docs/#faq-cloudsync

And just as easy to use compatible free tools on iOS & Android with it.
https://keepassxc.org/docs/#faq-platform-mobile

For iOS, we suggest Strongbox and KeePassium to open KeepassXC databases.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/strongbox-password-safe/id897283731
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/keepassium-keepass-passwords/id1435127111

And for Android, we recommend KeePassDX and KeePass2Android.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunzisoft.keepass.free
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=keepass2android.keepass2android

I apologize if BitWarden is the only consideration, as I understand this is
not BitWarden, but it is a free respectable password management solution.

Another option, which actually works quite well in its simplicity, is to
put the plaintext password file into a TrueCrypt VeraCrypt LUKS container.

VeraCrypt is a FOSS encryption program for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux.
https://veracrypt.eu/en/

Free third-party apps work with the database on both Android & iOS.

This is not possible, since Bitwarden needs a *server*. Just having some
storage is not enough. However, all data is encrypted on the device,
before it is send to the server, so using Bitwarden without your own
server is not a problem.

To run your own server - see
<https://bitwarden.com/help/install-on-premise-linux/>.

That looks promising - as long as it works across the various OS' I
mention in the OP.

OK. Fair enough. It's good for the OP to know multiple people recommend it.

The difference here, in this particular case, is the OP is on Apple.
Most Apple users are a lot dumber than most Android users (IMHO).

Specifically this particular Apple user is one of the dumber Apple users.
The OP isn't smart enough to look up keepass compatible products on iOS.

So your "+1" is fine for the OP to know multiple people use keepass.
But the OP needed to know how to get the functionality on iOS.

He's not smart enough to get the funcdtionality on his own.
Which is why the many links were provided for him for every platform.

But I do thank you for the "+1" on the utility of Strongbox & Keepassium on
iOS (which are the equivalents to KeepassXC according to their web site).

This way others will know that the products are equivalent.
And that they can get them for free no matter which platform they are on.

Thanks!

Original links:
I saw your answers for BitWarden where another suggestion is KeepassXC
(the XC stands for cross compatible with macOS, Windows & Linux).
https://keepassxc.org/

Their documentation discusses most of the questions you might have.
https://keepassxc.org/docs/

For example, Cloud synchronization with Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive,
ownCloud, Nextcloud etc. https://keepassxc.org/docs/#faq-cloudsync

And just as easy to use compatible free tools on iOS & Android with it.
https://keepassxc.org/docs/#faq-platform-mobile

For iOS, we suggest Strongbox and KeePassium to open KeepassXC databases.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/strongbox-password-safe/id897283731
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/keepassium-keepass-passwords/id1435127111

And for Android, we recommend KeePassDX and KeePass2Android.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunzisoft.keepass.free
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=keepass2android.keepass2android

I apologize if BitWarden is the only consideration, as I understand this is
not BitWarden, but it is a free respectable password management solution.
