Today on pages B1 and B3 in the natiomnal print edition of the New York Times I have just read an article with the above headline about Dr. Ivan Sutherland, who once created CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor) technology and is now proposing superconductor chips. Turning from page B1 to B3, I saw the name of Carver Mead, who is one of the great geniuses of computer science. Thirty or forty years ago I attended a lecture by Carver Mead on the campus of the University of Washington. Carver Mead must have been nervous, for he smoked a cigarette before walked to the podium to give his talk. Carver Mead kept looking expectantly up at Mentifex, who is now ashamed to admit that I dozed off during part of the lecture. Perhaps Carver Mead had heard of my mass mailings of brain-mind diagrams and my efforts to communicate my AI design.
I was fascinated by Carver Mead and his effort to create an artificial retina for computer vision. At the end of the article, I looked back to see who had written it, and it was by another person whom I had met years later on the campus, John Markoff.
