*ONE* human suspect allegedly committed this crime. When I went to school, "they/them" pronouns referred to multiple people.

I see your point. But with the media, "If it bleeds, it leads", so it will absolutely never happen.
And in any case, traditional newspapers are dead. Everything is reported visually. Either on TV or online.
