I still use Forte Agent. This filter expression works in it. If you're
using another newsreader that allows kill filters with regular
expressions, it should work with or without minor tweaking.

Author: {^\?} AND From: {\@gmail.com}

This filters all messages posted using a @gmail.com address where the
Author's name begins with a question mark. If you want to be more
aggressive, or if the poster's tactics change, you could join them
with OR instead of AND.

If you're using Google Groups, I have no idea what you must do, but
using a proper newsreader would be a good start.

Maybe you could look up what the most commonly used Thai letters are and
create killfiles for those.

Here's another idea - that seems to work in "trn":

/........................................................@gmail.com/h:=j

The idea is that you put in a lot of dots and it will match anything from
gmail where the from is very long. Note that I am not quite to the point
of just killing anything from gmail, although the idea is tempting.

Note that using "h" means search the whole header - which seems to be the
only way to make trn do the right thing.

You also need:

/^[^:]*@gmail.com/h:=j

This handles lines with really, really long "from" lines, where the @gmail
is on a continuation line. Note that the "^:" part ensures that normal
gmail posters do not get killed.

Anyway, you need both of these lines in your trn killfile. As far as I can
tell, this handles all of the cases.

Now, if I can just figure out a way to kill the "mushroom spam" in comp.lang.c

Oh, so it's Thai that this guy/gal is bombarding us all with, eh? Appreciate the clarification, Traveltron!

And much thanks to you too, Kenny, for your suggested e-tech remedies; alas, I haven't a clue as to employ any of these "killfile" tricks (which, of course, so many of y'all use to make my own way-too-wordy postings invisible to you, I'm guessing).

Again, use the + which is needed when you enter the newsgroup threaded.
Also you want to search for that on From, a header in NEWSOVERVIEW so
that search is "instant". You use /h+ to search additional headers that
aren't in NEWSOVERVIEW.

>The idea is that you put in a lot of dots and it will match anything from

Use of a Gmail address on From is a different concept than whether the
article was injected through Google Groups.

>Note that using "h" means search the whole header - which seems to be the
>only way to make trn do the right thing.

I avoid /h+ unless I have a reason to search a header that's not in
NEWSOVERVIEW.

NEWSOVERVIEW is the function that downloads specific headers to create a
useful index.

Huh?

Use of Google Groups allows extremely limited kill filing. Any number of
newsreaders use similar "recipies" in their kill files, but in others,
the technique is similar but not identical.

There's also scoring, which prioritizes the order in which one reads
articles. trn4 offers both but its scoring technique was copied from
another newsreader.

It's better to become a subscriber on a News server and read news with a
newsreader than to use Google Groups.

I don't see any of that mess. Forte Agent subsitutes ? in place of
anything in the header that isn't 7-bit ASCII. That's why the regular
expression I recommended used ?. But now I understand why people are
talking about foreign languages.

Lucky YOU, David; for there are at least nine or ten DOZENS of this Thai nonsense up so far, and still more on the way it seems. (Balancing out some of the Styble-generated nonsense for sure, but annoying nonetheless.) How long can this annoyance last? (As for how long the concurrent Styble annoyance [that so many of y'all similarly detest] can last...well, I still hope to make 100, still more than 31 years down the road.)

Meanwhile, Sir Carson: you got your Brooks Robinson tribute up at DeadorAlive yet, I'm presuming?

Have you seen this is other newsgroups?
I'm seeing it only in the two newsgroups I frequent. It's making me
paranoid.

For every newsgroup,
trn,trn,trn,
there is a reader,
trn,trn,trn,
and a line for every filter
under heaven!

(I use tin most of the time, though trn is apparently
nicer to .newsrc files...but is there a way to block
messages that use that Thai alphabet?)

You've probably heard this already, but stick the word "the" in the search bar above. Hopefully, those posting will also use that word in the title. It looks like this nonsense is continuing. Could go on for days. Or more.
