Drat! My attempts to obscure identity failed.

Yes, but I 'm pretty sure it only happens when she has mild congestion.

I hear a dull thrumming at night; my SO doesn't. I think there's
ghostly underground working still going on. Can a river rumble that much?
PS it's not the freezer. That's off overnight - oh, could it be a

Is this a well known 'thing', and I am only now hearing about it?

I'd never heard of it either, but it makes sense for saving money and energy.
As long as the door isn't opened, it will stay cold enough overnight. It would

Leccy saving measure. It's an old inefficient blighter, and "frost free";
i.e. it switches itself off for a bit at random anyway. Might as well be at
night so I don't hear it humming, and nothing coming from the solar panels.
OK, not a lot generated in today's gloom.

Why not? And what if it just stays cold enough?

(I suspect that what you're talking about is the idea that if your freezer is so
well insulated that its temperature doesn't change significantly when unplugged
overnight, you don't use significant energy overnight. But I'm not sure.)

If KMJ&SO's idea or mine is that they can let their freezer warm up a bit, maybe
they could save even more money by setting the temperature a little higher.

Yes, the savings must come from decreasing heat loss caused by a smaller
temperature gradient over the thermal insulation.

Indeed.
And if you have cheaper power at night you could do just the opposite:
Let it run at night to take in extra cold.
(wastes some energy, saves some $$)

Best compromise: set the timer to off during the night,
and on again half an hour before the low rate ends.
It is all quite marginal, really.
If it isn't you could have saved -much- more
by buying a better freezer long ago,

Now that I have solar panels on the roof I have become more conscious of
the difference between daytime and nighttime electricity. We don't
switch the freezer off, but we do make sure that the dishwasher and
washing machine run only during sunlight hours.

Alas, I can speak from experience. In 1987 we went for a few days to
Italy. Being conscious of the need to save gas and electricity we cut
the gas and electricity before setting out, forgetting the
refrigerator. At about the level of Nice I remembered, but by then it
was too late to go back. On our return there was a lot of stuff to
throw away.

Leccy saving measure. It's an old inefficient blighter, and "frost free";
i.e. it switches itself off for a bit at random anyway. Might as well be at
night so I don't hear it humming, and nothing coming from the solar panels.
OK, not a lot generated in today's gloom.

No it's olde and the temp plummets. But (hopefully) not enough to defrost
the goods inside in 14 hrs. As posted (I hope) elsewhere it has a "frost
free" feature that means it does this anyway, just that it kicks in and
out at inconvenient times.

Not an option on the controls; theo-heretic-ally it cuts off at -24, but
rarely gets near that due to bad seals (arf arf).

Maybe; I see it as saving the thing from landfill as long as possible.

One of our disappointments after getting solar power: I realised that
our inverter can produce up to 5 kW, but the air conditioner is a 10 kW
unit.

The other disappointment: we've just received our first electricity bill
after getting solar. It says that our consumption has halved, but to
compensate for this the price has doubled.

Our roof is 112 years old. Just had solar panels fitted and yes, I might
not be around to see payday. I'm 83!

I initially resisted solar power on the grounds that the payback period
was too long. When I re-checked this year, it was six years, which isn't
all that long.

Even if I don't survive six years, it will still be an asset for my heirs.

The UK government introduced an absurdly generous feed-in tariff scheme
to encourage early adopters, and I took advantage of that back in 2011.
At that time, here in SE England with a near-ideal roof, the payback
period was going to be around twelve years. As it turned out, the panels
paid for themselves (plus the subsequent cost of adding pigeon netting)
in just eight years. Much of that is down to a steady increase in yield;
we initially generated around 3.5 MWh in a year, but now regularly
exceed 4 MWh. This year, inspite of a dull and wet September, we're
already over the 3.5 MWh mark. Add to that the increase in electricity
prices from the grid and it looks to have been a pretty good investment.

Indeed and it would be a plus point for a house sale. Solar panels have
become a lot more efficient in the recent past.

You mean new ones are better than the older ones I had fitted.
Our panels are entropically getting less efficient, unless our Mr Banarjee
can apply himself to thinking of a simple fix.
