Anyone know if authorities have yet figured out how long he was on the run? That is, do they think he shot himself only minutes or an hour or so after the second of his twin lethal sessions, or did get away, catch his breath somewhere and then survive on the run for a couple days during the dragnet, until giving up his futile lam just hours (or even mere minutes) before authorities happened upon his corpse?

CNN reported yesterday (28 Oct) that the cops had found a note at
Card's home saying that Card planned to kill himself before the police
could find him.

No, it didn't.

He left instructions for unlocking his cell phone and a list of bank
accounts and other accounts that police interpreted as preparation for
his own death, but police have not stated that a suicide note was found.

I know what it said. I read it. I summarized it. You cut the quote.

It wasn't a suicide note. It didn't say he planned to kill himself at
all. The police made reasonable inferences that he anticipated his death
but the note he left was typical of instructions one leaves about
disposal of property.

It's also the answer to one of my fave sports-story stumpers: "Just about EVERYONE knows that Cassius Clay only fought Sonny Liston twice, and most of those clearly remember that the FIRST Clay/Liston fight was down in Miami Beach...but where was the SECOND fight held, the single-round 'phantom punch' knockout?"

NOT ONE person has got this correct since I first started quizzing folks on this circa 1985: Lewiston, Maine. (Promoters for various reasons couldn't get the New York and New Jersey boxing regulators' approval, and other states balked too, but some Mainers including the Governor himself saw the potential for putting America's Vacationland [as their license plates charmingly proclaim] more prominently in the American consciousness and sanctioned the fight...all the while never imagining it would be a single-round bout.

And yep, the still-standing Lewiston Colesse was my much-anticipated first stop that first of the two times I've thus far driven up to Lewiston, in February 2000. Still often used, the arena was that afternoon hosting youth hockey, and that was fun to watch in what would have been a near-ringside seat for a few minutes, while intently recalling the many times I had watched Liston's legendary first-round debacle.

Then, over a dozen years later, the same building was ALSO my first stop the SECOND time I drove to up to Lewiston...that time since was it was the latest stop on the since-1988 Neverending Tour, which happened to be musically booked into the modern-looking edifice on Wednesday, April 10, 2013. And this time I noticed something I'd missed the prior time I was inside The Colesse, up on a wall next to a concession stand: an enlargement of that famous photo of the future-Ali lording arms-raised over the allegedly-dive-taking Liston, alongside a blow-up of media coverage detailing the infamous match, if not its ensuing conspiracy suspicions.

Oh, and don't bypass it next time you cross over from The Granite State into Maine, as little Lewiston is a lovely, picturesque New England small city, but now also unfortunately identified with lethal mayhem.

I remember the fight and also the town of Lewiston Maine because I saw it on TV when it happened. I remember Lewiston Maine the same way I remember Littleton Colorado (big time school shooting) - just one event to plow it into my brain where it remains forever lodged as some kind of johnny on the spot memory talent that is good for Jeopardy and other high paying quiz shows. Yes, I have that talent but it's not as fast as those who win consistently on the show. Every time I watched the show I'd play along for fun, shouting out answers right or wrong and applauding myself when I got them right. But even when I got them right, would they have been fast enough to get through. Plus I'd be penalized for wrong answers. So I never saw myself winning a single episode of the show I ever saw. Not until one day a few years ago I turned it on and I was blowing the field away. I know I would have won that day. At about the halfway point of the show I learned that the entire week was devoted to journalists. No wonder. There are some smart journalists, people who know a lot about a lot of things. But as a rule I'd say journalists are pretty much nothing but bureaucrats reading script and holding a microphone. I couldn't believe how little those people knew.

Authorities are now saying the late Maine gunman Card didn't suicide his way out of trouble until the about a dozen hours before the cops found his corpse.

"Suicided his way out of trouble" - LOL. Also LOL, me misreading
"Maine" for "Marine" and going, "Yep, naturally, a lot of mass killers
come out of the Marines." Then I noticed I had misread the word.
But even still it's true - the Marines do produce a lot of domestic
killings.
