Subject: Meaning of Lurid

The Spider and the Fly by Mary Howitt
<https://www.familyfriendpoems.com/poem/the-spider-and-the-fly-by-mary-howitt>

<<Do children's poems still have such lurid lessons?>>

I'm nonplussed at being asked this question. One could use this
poem to teach ingenues to beware of lechers and one could
describe what lechers are wont to do but can a description of
a hypothetical scenario be lurid?

I don't see why not. The AHD says,

1.
a. Characterized by vivid description or explicit details that are meant
to provoke or shock: /a lurid account of the crime./

The poem doesn't seem very shocking, though--just "she ne'er came
out again". A description of a spider killing and eating a fly could get
a lot more lurid.

I suspect that he's referring not to the poem itself but to the kind of
presentation I outlined. Could making it detailed make it lurid if it is
meant for teaching, not for provoking or shocking?
